i have 1 dog & 1 breeding bitch, she has 2 litters. i have kept 2 bitch puppies from her last litter, one of which i am about to show. i wish to breed from them in about 3 yrs. where do i obtain a suitable stud dog from. is it breed clubs or what. should i buy my own dog in. i am trying to establish my own kennel(i have an affix etc). i have 7 books on the subject of Cavaliers and none can tell me where to go after selecting 2 bitch puppies from the foundation bitch.also i would like to join a Cavalier Club but joining seems difficult, you have to have a 'proposer' who has to be a member of the club-i don't know any members-so how do i become accepted.also my dog has a clear hear at 6 &half yrs, is this good or average my br' bitch has a grade1 at 5&half yrs, which has just been revealed to me by the vet, should i now retire my br'bitch. i would like official docmentation for the health of their hearts but the vet seems unable or unwilling to do this-should i go to another vet or what?advice would be gratefully received.

Go to shows, see which dogs/lines you like the look of, study their pedigrees and see how well they dovetail in with your bitches'. You'll meet Club members when you start showing and make friends. When people see that you are serious about the breed they'll be very welcoming.

to jeanjenie(sorry if wrongly spelt)thank you for your reply, very helpful, what shows do recommend i should visit first? to the other people, no, i am not Cath. I am a different Cookie, namely -Cookie-(the name of one of my pups!)thank you for your advice.

Probably the best shows to start at are general Open Shows - they are relaxed and fairly informal. Do you go to ringcraft classes with your dogs?
- By -cookie- [gb] Date 23.08.03 16:11 UTC
to Jeanjenie, yes, we have sharted Ringcraft clases about 4wks ago & I have also joined the canine club there. As, yet i haven't seen any other Cavalier owners at the club. I am planning to put my 9mnth old bitch into a Companion Dog Show to start with as this is my first time in the show circuit also.

Hi Cookie,
The people who run ringcraft classes usually have a couple of schedules for local open shows - if not they are advertised in the weekly dog papers - Dog World and Our Dogs.
:)

hi jeanjenie, i already buy Dog World(although some of it is still difficult to understand), i know iv'e still got a lot to learn. Quite funny really, i am armed to the teeth with books, 7 breed books, 1 on breeding and 1 on the show circuit. Always reading them over & over again!

Its Cath H isn't it? Why are you posting as a guest? Jeangenie is correct but I could have sworn someone has already told you this when you posted the same question before :)

Don't think it's Cath as her bitch is only three months old & her dog a bit older :)

Lots of people seem to be breeding Cavaliers or want to breed them :(

I don't breed even though I've had dogs for years I'd rather buy a puppy from a good breeder, had to rescue two dogs from two litters I bred(one from each)& that finished me I could not understand why the new owners did what they did after being vetted etc

Yes I'm getting confused :) this one is Cookie, who has asked the same stuff about three times now.
- By -cookie- [gb] Date 23.08.03 16:06 UTC
to Isabelle, yes i did ask the same question more than once because my PCs a bit rubbish!Sorry about that.
- By -cookie- [gb] Date 23.08.03 16:20 UTC
to moonmaiden,I understand your concerns fully, thats why i am trying to find out as much as possible. I don't want mess up the breed. I know that they were the dogs of the seventies & eighties to own and also know that a lot of uncaring people were making a fast buck in breeding them, which evidently we ended up with a lot 'sickly dogs' and 'cranky' genetics.

~Cookie~

They are still the dogs to breed & are still being over bred. All it takes to be a breeder is to own a fertile dog & bitch & let them mate

I get lots of requests to use my dogs(don't do bitches)on "pet"bitches, the breeders of my boys only breed when they want something to show & are very particular about hearts etc i refer all requests to my boys breeders to see if the bitches are compatible. To date no one has used my boys & I don't care they are my Boys 1st, second & third & show dogs occassionally & definitely not breeding machines

Sorry but if you have already been breeding why are you asking all these questions now ?

I believe you should own, show & then think about breeding if they are good examples of the breed with all health checks done & you have bookings for the puppies before you mate your bitch

but then that's just my opinion

I have also tried to join the CKCS club but cannot as I do not know any members to propose or second me. I have e-mailed them and still waiting for a reply.

All you cavalier owners wishing to join the club. It's not so hard to find people to propose you.I and many of my friends all got our cavs at around the same time 2 years ago.We regularly visited the shows even though I am not interested in showing myself, but you get your face known.I also joined a puppy socialising club and I joined the CKCS forum http://www.ckcsforums.com. I got chatting to the girls that post there and over some time got to know them and they me. when I expressed a desire to join the club I had many people offer to propose and second my membership.
