Dont know the full ins and outs of this but my dog was on Metacalm for several years with no ill effects (he died at around 14 years of age). Your vet will have advised you to keep your dogs weight in control to reduce stress on the bones. Others may suggest some homeopathic remedies. The success of these will depend on your dogs individual condition. I tried acupuncture and that seemed to help a a lot, but ultimately it was careful diet and metacalm which helped my oldie most. Someone on here may be able to advise you on diets for arthritis.
