I have a 7 month old male bearded collie who is having problems with one of his eyes - the white part of his left eye swells up and the eye weeps yellow gunge, it is a bit like a skin of jelly growing over his eye. It is not conjunctivitus or an allergic reaction.

Is this a common problem with beardies?

I agree, this sounds rather unpleasant, you must certainly see your vet & not leave it as eyes can ulcerate so quickly.(Mair will probably critisize me for saying "unpleasant" & not answering your question though!)
