Topic Dog Boards / General / 2 Flexi Lead or not 2 Flexi Lead????
- By Sooz [gb] Date 21.08.03 13:44 UTC
Afternoon all,

Quick question, Perry is 6 months old, is good on the lead (apart from a little tugging at the beginning of a walk), but has only ever been used to a short reign . I would like to give him a little more freedom for 'road' walks, but am unsure what is the best way to introduce him to the flexi lead. I've got a funny feeling that once he gets more than 3 paces in front of me his concentration will go and with it all of my training.

Advise?

I have used a flexi lead with both my Cavs since they were able to go out. I have had no problems at all, they like the freedom of being to run about alittle as well as my peace of mind that they cannot go too far.
I don't think you will have a problem, 5m isn't really that far.

Depends what you mean by 'road' work, I love my Flexis and they are invaluable in fields etc which are not fully secure or where there might be livestock but you can never use them extended on a road where there might be traffic it would be far too dangerous, the dog can move out sideways into the road before you could possibly retract them.

We were advised to avoid the flexileads as our lad pulls and so we use a plastic washing line, or two shorter leads clipped together inopen fields as we had a slashing time in woods once.

Flexis in my opinion should never be used extended on a roadway. I have seen people allowing their dogs out quite a way on one, but there is nothing to then prevent the dog running into traffic, as flexis cannot be realed in very quickly. Also they can tangle around people or car mirrors etc.

they should really only be used where you would normally allow free running, in order to give you more control when recall is not yet perfected.
