Hello my name is kate and have just started breeding . I have a 3 year old cocker spaniel and has come in season so i had hunted down a stud dog. When it came to breeding it was quite difficult as she did not allow the dog to tie. We tried 3 other stud dogs in this 1 maiting and had no success with tieing.
I was wondering if it was possible if she may of taken although they didnt tie. have you ever had this happen to please get back to me as she is 2 weeks into pregnancy and i still have a doubt in my mind if she may of taken. I came away from the stud owner not paying any fee was this right

If she has taken you will have to put all four possible fathers on the registration documents :( I am amazed that you found four suitable studs most people find it a complex matter to find one whose lines suit the bitches let alone four!

What an extraordinarily stupid stud owner! Have you any idea of the complications this is going to cause you? You're going to have to name all 4 dogs as potential sires, and then pay for DNA tests to determine which pups are sired by which dog.... it's going to be a nightmare! The best thing to hope is that she has missed and try again at another season, avoiding that dog-owner like the plague!

I'm assuming that the above poster will not be registering her puppies.

Talk about trying to get your bitch infected.

But, lets face it, someone who mates her bitch with several dogs in one go because she is SO desperate to have puppies and the stud dog owner is SO desperate to get paid, is hardly going to give a toss if her dog gets an infection in the process

They will if it's a womb infection.

they don't seem to care that the bitch could have been hurt in the process either... disposable dogs.

Well this is one time I hope it is a wind up, to think it is true is enough to keep you awake at night.

I'm utterly gobsmacked at your stupidity Kate. What did you think you were doing? I hope with all my heart that your poor little bitch has missed altogether, and that you read and learn ALOT more before you ever breed a litter. 4 dogs? Good god.

Maybe some good advice, rather than harsh words would help?
People are going to breed their dogs whatever, why not point them towards the right infomation? and good advice, maybe then, they will think twice.

May be because we have tried that so many times and know they don't listen, if they were interested in doing the best for their dogs they would ask questions first, read books, do research. At this stage there is no point in asking questions or us giving advice it's too late.
Valid point Jackie, but this person is a guest, unless I'm wrong, so they may well not have seen what's been posted regarding breeding before.

You don't need to read this board, if you are going to breed your bitch or use your dog at stud, then you find out what it is your are getting into, we are not talking a fancy to do a bit of gardening here, these are live creatures we are talking about for goodness sake. What we have described here is mass rape on a virgin.
Hey Jackie. i'm not having a go at you; or anyone else for that matter, someone has (attempted) to mate their bitch, and they're asking for advice, so point them in the right direction, if you want too, some of the posts are so aggresive, without explaining why, as I've said, people will always breed dogs, you just hope if they are asking questions, then they want to learn.
Blowing someone out of the water will just send them back to doing <<their own thing>> and dogs and pups could suffer more.
Oh and no-one inc me mentioned <<a bit of gardening>> am fully aware we are talking about living creatures

FWIW I agree with Liberty :)
It has happened ...it is no good shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. Helpful , friendly advice will be better received than being told off. If we try and educate them rather than anything else , maybe they will think twice before doing it again ...and even educate some of their friends and family in the process?
:)

Fair point, Melody.
So what would you advise this person to do?

Im not a breeder JG ...except of humans :D ..I would leave the advice to people who have a wealth of knowledge ;) :D

Hi
For what its worth, I do agree with you, and believe me, I have tried the nicely nicely approach and still got shot down in flames! To be honest, I do try to be a bit more diplomatic with people who are looking into breeding (mostly referring them back to their breeder), because 9 times out of ten they will do it anyway, but when someone has (apparently) used no common sense, and has blatantly endangered the life of their bitch, then its perhaps pushing the limits of even the most accomodating person. I guess it depends too if you have seen a mating - its not as if its a gentle procedure with no risk or difficulty - and to go through it with four dogs in one go? Sorry, but thats just cannot be explained away as "naivity"

Hi - this is downright cruelty - harsh words are needed. The poster may be naive - but the stud dog owner certainly is not.

why dont people leave breeding to those that no what their doing
So how do you know what you're doing... if you have never done it before. Everyone has to start sometime??
I have no desire to breed, but the breeder of my dog, must have started somewhere.

Sorry it is too late to do anything to help this poor bitch and I doubt her owner or the stud owner care as long as she is in whelp, so please allow us to be angry. It is not possible to give sound advice when you are so cross at least we are not making personal attacks, which believe me in these circumstances would be very easy.
I remember in the past someone doing something that every one, well nearly everyone, not only disapproved but were very angry and told her so, and I am still in contact with that person and they did learn something from the outcry, so venting anger is sometimes worth while.
If the guest really wants advice then get the bitch to a vet, at least make sure she is not damaged and if she is in pup get that dealt with too, one of the few times when I think advising someone to spay would do the bitch a favour.
(Meant to say that is my last word, I can't pat the guest on the sholder and try to help sort the mess, so I'll say no more)
