Topic Dog Boards / General / Ruining the grass!
- By Zolti and Kamer [nl] Date 20.08.03 10:34 UTC
Does anyone know of a way to stop my two boys (Hungarian Vizslas) from making such a diabolical mess of the grass in our garden? It's their wee but I think it might be exceptionally strong because it kills the grass within a matter of hours. We've got more dead grass than green. Anything I can add to their food/water to make it less potent or any other suggestions gratefully received. (They are both walked for about 3 hours a day so it's not as if it's all dumped in the back garden!
Thanks

What age are your dogs ?

I had the same problem with my two but only while they were young (under a year old). Not sure why though.

It helps a bit if you can douse the area with cold water - perhaps keep a topped-up watering can or bucket by the back door.

hmmm I thought I'd answered this one already but it seems to have disappeared

There is a herbal remedy you can get called greenum I think

It neutralises the acid in the wee apparently

Not sure how succesful it is but might be worth a try.

You can get it in pets at home

The herbal remedy already mentioned seems to work. Check the composition of teh food that you are feeding - I also heard you can increase carbohydrates such as rice and potatoes in the diet and reduce protein to avoid strong acid-urine production. Just ensure the balance is still at the recommended health level.
