Puppy 15 week diagonsed with kennel cough

my lab puppy is in the vets very poorly at the moment with kennel cough - on drip, inj of antibiotics, pain/antinflamatory injection, also slavering lots, coughing, lethargic and diahorrea.

Does anyone know the incubation period for this.

We have only had him 5 days - could he have come to us with this???? or has he got it once arrived with us???

Contacted breeder - says others left are fine.

Was a bit on the thin side when we picked him up from breeder - since lost more weight - not eating properly but drinking.

ANswers please

Sorry to hear about your pup I have an 11 wk old pup with kennel cough. She started coughing 3 days after we collected her and yet our other dogs don't have it and nor does the breeder.
I wish you luck with your pup.

Hi Russ

Mine is a lab as well.
Devon is much better in the last 24 hrs and hopefully will be able to be vaccinated soon. I hope your pup is also doing well.

Hi Nicolla

Puppy is doing better today but still in the vets - still got him dripped and antibiotics, trying him with some food. Hopefully he will be home soon. Am going to get him insured and going to ask about vacination for kennel cough - he's had all the other injections at 8 weeks and 12 weeks - we only got him 5 days ago and he is 15 weeks old.

Mmh Yes Russ I think your puppy has KC and would have been incubating it when you collected him/her.

What breed is he/she? I imagine the breeders are saying porkies.......nothing coughing with them.

For those of you who suspect KC then BENYLIN is excellent in assisting an early recovery (even my vet agrees with me !!) and I have been known to rub VICK around the throat (externally!).

Hi

He's a lab pup. When we picked him up we thought he looked a bit thin although there was nothing between the three pups that were left. Breeder has his mum plus another bitch slightly about 20 weeks old plus a springer spaniel plus he's taken a bitch back from someone he said while the people were on their holidays he was looking after it (there were 5 puppies in the garage but only three for sale). We thought we could bring him on and feed him up - hopefully he will get through this - but very poorly when I left him at vets yesterday - ive had a rough nite worrying cannot wait until 9am to ring vets to see how he is. Will update later.

Thanks for reply

Incubation time for KC is betweeen 5 and 10 days so your puppy was already incubating the disease at the breeders. One thing I was told by a vet was that the dogs keep kc under control whilst in their normal environment but once they are moved and put under a little stress the disease takes hold - it's isn't that unusual for the other pups not to be showing symptoms whilst still with the breeder and dam.

I had a 5mth old puppy a few yrs back that I visited before buying from the breeder everyday for 2 weeks - non of her dogs were coughing the other pup she'd kept was as happy and healthy looking as the one I took, I had her vet checked the next day and everything was fine, by the end of that week she had kc and was very sick, my vet advised me at the time this was classic purchased pup very sick remaining litter with the breeder fine.

I would just like to point out that the breeder cannot be blamed in any way for the pups having Kennel cough, meaning it won't have occured through any neglect. It is an airborne virus and could have been brought in on the clothes of the breeder or any other visitor to the pups.

It is like a cold in humans. When children start school they often are prone to colds and coughs because they are mixing with more people than the4y were used to, and this stresses the immune system. After a while this seems to get less frequent, when the immunity builds up.

If her own pups and dogs are fine, then the breeder would have no way of knowing the pup was brewing something.

If it was my pup, I certainly would want to pay the Vet expenses (after all I would have had to if it had happened before the pup went!)

Excuse me brainless

I am not accusing the breeder of causing this to the puppy and I have not accused him of neglect I just wanted peoples opinion as to whether puppy would be coming down with this when we picked him up or whether he's got it from our home/area - the breeder is a very nice man who has rang me countless time to see how pup doing - pup is better than yesterday but still in the vets. I am just very anxious as we have paid a lot of money for him and thought I was going to loose pup last night and only had him 4 days..............

That is good :D Sometimes if something goes wrong it is quite natural to want to blame someone, so was just pointing out that the breeder may not be telling porky pies as was suggested in one post.

As the pup is older (at 15 weeks) he should hopefully recover well from the KC. My breeder was very lucky with one litter she had who went down with KC at 4 weeks, and all survived and thrived despite it, though their homing had to be dealyed a couple of weeks to be sure they were over it. Often though with very young pups or elderly dogs it can be too much for them.

Carole how's your pup doing now. Mine had a dose of KC at about 6months was'nt too bad with him but i think i got it early enough. Had oral antibiotics and he picked up a treat.
I would'nt have know KC existed or what the symptoms were if it was not for reading similar postings on this site. Thank God for this site. XXX
Hope everythings ok with yor pup.

Agree with the others, about 10 days, and not the breeders fault, but you need to keep your pup away from other dogs for about 10 to 12 weeks as he can pass the infection on even after he has stopped having any symptoms. Hope you have him home soon.

Hi Jackie

I have another dog who is 10 months old. Vet just said keep eye on him - but he is big and strong not showing any signs of anything yet!!!!!!! hope he doesnt get it ...... dont want to go through all this again will ask vet about vaccine for other dog.
I am not blaming the breeder I just wanted to know if he would have had this when we got him because it is strange for a dog to become so sick within such a short space of time 4 days....

Thanks for your reply

Hi Jackie

First of all I am not blaming the breeder. I just wanted to know if he could have come with this incubating thats all. It seems unusal for a dog to become so sick after only having him for 4 days. I have another dog a 10 month old lab - vet said to keep my eye on him just in case. the 10 mth old is fine and he is a big strong dog - not weak, thin like the puppy who only weighed 14 lbs at 15 weeks old!!!!!!

Thanks for your reply

It is likely that the other pup will get it but it is the very young and the very old who are in danger, most dogs are not made ill by the problem. And that is the trouble, people ignore the dog coughing, say or think it is because it is pulling on the lead or has been chewing a stick or something. So they take this dogs out as usual and the Kennel Cough is spread throughout an area. Did think you thought it may be the breeders fault and it may be but it is unlikely that they knew but they may not have been as carefull as they should have been with young pups, however who was to blame does not matter, getting the pup well does. And I'm glad to hear that your pup is on the mend and I hope it will continue to do so.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 30.07.03 06:40 UTC
Forgot to say that the cough is like the cold, it is caused by many different virous (sp) and the injections do not cover them all. One type is, I beleve included in the booster and the other is given by spray up the nose, these work on some of the agents that cause Kennel Cough but some types do not have an antigen (sp) Hope between my inability to spell you understand.

Thanks all for your replies.

I am pleased to report Jack the puppy is now home and on the mend. Needs building up now still on antibiotics, vitamin supplements, special food etc etc etc. The breeder has contacted me to say that he feels so bad about this happening that he is going to pay half of the vets bills - i said not necessary didnt blame him but he insists. The vet said that Jack has been incubating this for a while and that the change from breeders to new home (like as mentioned further up this posting) caused the pup stress which in turn zapped him and bugs took advantage of him being low. Anyway lets not dwell on this pup on mend need to look forward not back.

Thanks for support

Pleased to hear the good news and that the breeder is going to helpwith the vet bill.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.07.03 21:52 UTC
So glad he is on the mend!!!

This shows you have a good breeder there, and they will be an invaluable resource for you and your pup. speaking as a breeder there is nothing nicer than getting regular updates on my pups.

I have two of mine here for a two week visit, and they are nearly five and nearly six!!! :D

hi
can anyone help i have a black lab pup who we have had now for 5 weeks he has had a cough since second day home took straight to vets who adv had a sore throat was on anti tablets for three weeks still no better took him back and vet says the cough has to run its course, still as bad as ever, lab fine orther wise running playing and eating, only cough really after been asleep or running around
- By Lisa-safftash [gb] Date 19.08.03 22:54 UTC
Annette,

I think it would be a good idea to find a different vet.

In my experience, if a dog/pup is coughing like that, there's a real reason for it.

Take care
