when i got my westie puppy from the breeders he came with beta puppy food when the vet asked what food he was fed on he said beta puppy food was cheap and cheerful does anyone recommend any puppy food?

the vet is pretty much right.beta is ok and will suffice (have used it myself and dog will come to no harm on it) but generally speaking the more expensive feeds are more costly as they use better ingredients and meat as the main protien source.i do not think you can go far wrong with nutro personally.if its only for a dog the size of a westie you are only going to need to buy maybe 2 x 15kg bags of puppy food anyway.one other thing though the vets always tell you a feed is worse than it actually is cos they always tend to stock a premium feed and sell it at inflated prices.

I changed to Wafcol puppy from beta as my pup went off it and would not touch it she was also drink a lotttttt.
But now she is great on it and her coat is lovely, even though most of it has fallen out :-))

Arden Grange is my choice, its ingredients are very well sourced and wholesome and they are not involved with cruel animal testing. All the dogs I have fed it to. love it and gain and retain fabulous condition. Although it is not cheap, you feed less of it than cheaper foods and in the end its not really that expensive at all. You really dont need to add anything to it at all - no extra meat/milk/vits etc costs, in fact it should be fed neat with nothing added. If you cant find it locally it can be delivered direct to you.

I use Iams puppy food as one of my cavaliers has food intolerance, she is unable to digest Bakers (what she was put on by the breeder) or Pedigree Chum complete. She loves it and it is the only food she seems to be able to digest

Hi there I use James wellbeloved both on my Puppies and adults and have been doing so for 4 years now and find it rully good and easy to get hold off.
Used to use Pedigree chum but Puppy but found James wellbeloved kept its shape when soaked and the pups love it

Just to add that I have yet to meet a puppy reared on Beta that has done well on it, personally i think its one of the worst puppy foods, many seem to have upset tummies and the mineral content is not sufficient for healthy growth imo. Apart from that my dogs wont eat it, but will eat almost anything else - they are not stupid!!

I have reared two very healthy cocker litters on it having reared my first litter on eucanuba I didn't notice any difference in these next two, absulutely no problems and they tucked in happy enough :) good stout puppies. When my stud dog owner came to visit the last litter she was impressed enough to buy one :) which she went on to show.

Glad it suited your dogs, I have just heard so many poor reports about it on this board as well as my own experience of it. On my own message board the owner of one puppy has had a reccurring poorly tummy who was being fed it and her vet suggested changing the diet, it is now as right as rain.

I think thats the way with all the different makes though Westielover :) My terrier with a horrible history of colitis has chugged only for years on Beta suiting her very well. I tend now to never say use this/use that,I think people have to try things for themselves, and I never understand those that say 'my dog is fine on Bloggs Brand but I have heard it is not very good what shall I change to!!:)

I have seen a of litter reared on Beta puppy and dont Know if it was the Brand or the amount they was giving the pups but was in very poor body weight with loose stools. When asked why the used Beta they said it was the cheepest no way to rear dogs at all!!!

How stupid of them there are lots of cheaper foods than Beta ;)

Have you tried Red Mills Leader? It's relatively cheap, but has none of the "nasties" like chemicals in it. I reared my staffie pup on it, and all the rest get the adult version.

As far as feeding puppies is concerned - cost should not be a deciding factor in choosing the right food for them. They deserve the best quality food suitable for their age and eventual size/weight and "you only get out - what you put into them".

My pup and all of his litter mates have been bought up on Pedigree Puppy and it's first class, very healthy bouncy puppy and very solid.
