can someone please help me.my 16 week old akita pup sleeps out in the yard at night,it is more of an extra room as it has a roof and is completley waterproof.due to work ihave to leave her out there during the day for about 3-4 hours, the problem is that when she pees she walks all through it which then comes into the house,it also dose not do her paws any good.when we are out on short walks she does her other business ok,but as soon as we return she rushes straight out the back and pees.i have started to put paper down in her roomand then move it right outside and take her out to it,but she just sniffs at it then goes back into her room and pees and walks right through it.can anyone out there help?

Have you been teaching her where it is you want her to pee, if not, she wont know. She has now got into the habit of going undercover so you will have to start from scratch and teach her where it is she is to relieve herself. If you are not with her for 4 hours during the day you are going to have your work cut out when you are there, still it is worth a try.
When you are there keep the dog with you and as soon as she wakes from sleep or has eaten or finishes a play session, and about every hour, take her out and stay with her until she goes, tell her she is a good girl. When you are aware she is about to go say ‘have a pee’ ‘be quick’ or what ever you use. Paper will serve no purpose unless she knows what she is supposed to do with it, and IMO it is a waste of time to teach to pee on paper when what you want is a pee in the yard. Do not scold when she goes where she should not and clean the floor with a detergent and don’t use a disinfectant with bleach or ammonia in it, else you will encourage the use of that spot not lessen it.. Good luck, you will get there in the end.

i agree with jackie but i would also reward her with praise and a treat everytime she pees in the area you want her to.i would scold the dog as in show you are angry if you actually catch her in the act of peeing where you dont want her to but if you scold her after she has done the pee and not while in the act she wont know why youre scolding for.just my opinion.

Yes I do agree that if you see it is ok to scold but I would be happier to call her outside so you can then praise. If you know when she comes in she will go straight into her den and pee, then follow her quickly and call her outside and wait with her until she goes.
Being a big softie I will try to find a way of praising if I can as it works much quicker than the scold. JMO.

Just my opinion here and Kia is my first akita but in general she responded better to a firm hand than just treats/praises when she did good.
Different breeds react to different training methods - would suggest getting in touch with your breeder and seeing which training methods they use. I only managed to teach Kia to heel with treats the rest of the time she needed a firm hand to tell her when she was doing things not the way I wanted her to.
But as everyone will tell you never, ever scold after the fact as they will have no clue

It's true I don't have an Akita but I do have spitz, and I get much quicker results by encouraging and no result at all it I yell, except the dogs yelling back. But if you have had several Akitas I would bow to your knowledge.
hi everyone,i had her out for a short walk tonight and for the first time she peed while out but she also peed as soon as we got back to the house.also she is peeing about twice every hour is this normal?

It is normal for a puppy to pee a good deal, what you need to do is teach her to go in your yard as she can't take herself for a walk when she is on her own.

You are correct they do not respond to yelling - no dog does. By A firm hand I did not mean yelling.

Akitas being a large, powerful dog needs firm handling, or they could become a problem. My point is when it comes to where a puppy pees, is not a discipline matter, it is a case of communicating with the puppy until it understands where it is that you wish it to relieve it’s self. Don’t think we should confuse this sort of training with the correction of aggression or disobedience. IMO it is unfair to expect a dog to do as we wish, if we have not managed to let them know what it is we do expect. After all we take for granted that they will understand human talk and get upset when they don’t, it is up to us to make sure they know what the instruction means before we go use any firm handling.
