Topic Dog Boards / General / Personal info on dog tags

I just wanted to post this for new puppy/dog owners .

You should never put your dogs name on his/her dog tag...why?? If you do and your dog is taken the nasty person who takes him/her will know your dog's name putting your dog at ease with the stranger.

People ask me why my pups names are not on their tags.

Do you all agree ????
- By Wendy J [gb] Date 18.08.03 18:49 UTC
I can see the reasoning behind that. I do choose to put their names on the tag because I worry more about them taking off than being stolen. If they are lost and worried then I feel that someone finding them can make them feel more comfortable if they know their name and they might not be so scared.

I think it's down to personal preferences, however I prefer not to have my dogs names on their tags, just our Tel numbers.

Hi,
For anyone that's done the Kennel Club Good Citizen Awards, they'll know that a dog's ID tag by law should have the owners name (not dog's) and address as well, with phone number being optional.

I didn't know that. I put my surname and tel number on. I am not too sure about having my address put on the tag.
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 18.08.03 19:50 UTC
I dont think I would be happy about my address being on there either. We have surname, phone number and on the reverse our vet's number which is not only handy if the dog (heaven forbid) was in an accident but if your dog was found then your vet should be able to kennel it and he/she will have your personal details.

mine have house phone plus two mobile numbers then on the reverse it says i have a microchip please scan me.
I am a little worried as i am just signing my pup up for classes and on the application it say the minimum requirement is to have name and address on dog take, which i will not do. I live in area where i do not feel my dogs will be safe the address details on, they are both White GSD which are not overly common so they maybe stolen if someone happens to read them whilst i am out with them.

The LAW says you have to have your address!

To the best of my knowledge, no ones every been done for having name and postcode on their dog tag and this is enough to trace a dog - its a compromise at least!! :)
- By co28uk [gb] Date 18.08.03 20:26 UTC
I have just looked on the kennel Club Site where they say that name and post code and telephone number is fine. I looks like i will have to get another two tags made :-)
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 18.08.03 20:37 UTC
OK - It is a legal requirement to have the owners name and address on the tag when the animal is in a public place - more worryingly if the tag does not display such details then the dog is assumed to be a stray :( But that law came into effect in 1992 - I agree with co28uk - and these day's if someone brought the dog back and realised you were out they'll take the other dog and the tv?? Perhaps its time the LAW changed to protect us and our dogs from todays criminals?

Thank you for your support i do think that now we have micro chipping it is easy for the person who has found the dog to contact a vet or dog warden who have scanners, they can then be scanned and all the details are there to be found.
I will hold off getting another tag until i have spoken to my trainer.
- By westie lover [gb] Date 18.08.03 21:46 UTC
Maybe if you put on the tag your mobile number and "Microchipped-please ring and reverse charge - reward" may tempt a dishonest person to collect the reward rather than the dog. Even thought the name and address thing is "law" - surely the police wouldn't prosecute?
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 18.08.03 22:29 UTC
I've found a useful section about dog's and the law at www.cedts.org.uk - apparently this law about owners address on tags can only be enforced by local authority officers and NOT by police. Going back to our pets security..its a sad fact but like our car's if someone wants them, they will have them - my partners mother had a gorgeous saluki named lilly who was stolen from the garden, it was a very sad time and despite all the efforts of poster's, questioning and endless searching it was over a year later that a spanish water dog named Georgie was welcomed into the family to fill the void. Then just before christmas 2001 we received a phone call from Bristol dog's home saying they had Lilly!! We couldn't believe it she had been found in a raid on a house - unfortunately she was skin and bones and very nervous but she pulled through and today looks absolutely fantastic - Its a good job she likes Georgie!! She was microchipped if not who knows where she would have ended up?

I have:
our surname
our phone number
the vets phone number
i am identichipped

I would never put her name on her collar ( admittedly if someone is nice to her she may well go to them anyway, but it is a bit of extra security by not having it)
- By Cath H [gb] Date 19.08.03 10:48 UTC
I will also have my dog's tags changed and have my postcode put on them. It never accured to me ! They are also microchipped so I will also put that on the tag, think they will need a huge tag each at this rate ! better to be safe though
- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 19.08.03 11:37 UTC
bradleys tag says i am microchipped on one side and my telephone number on the reverse.
im happy with that.
- By Kerioak Date 19.08.03 11:59 UTC
I have my name and phone number on one side and "Vet" and phone number on the other. They also have microchip tags on their collars. I would not put my address on as it would be easy for someone to see I am out with my dog and visit my home in my absence. As vet's are always available I consider this sufficient and have got though various Good Citizen levels with it. Would be willing to argue with LA if necessary, regardless of law :)

If you are advise not to put your address on your luggage when outgoing on holiday it would be silly to put it on dog's tags. When this law came in telephones were not common in nearly every household as they are today.

I agree with Christine...You go girl ;) !! I hope the home insurers aren't reading this...It may be an excuse to not pay out in the event of a claim because your address was advertised in public!!?? But hey, thats a different forum.

After visiting the Kennel Club site i think i may get a tag with name house number and post code on, as my dog is registered with them it is on of there requirements. But if the training club that i am going to says the tag i have got is alright (home tel no. two mobile no.s and 'Ihave a micro chip please scan me') then i will not bother. Don't want to take the risk with them being stolen. Every where i go i get coments all the time people asking wuestions as to there breed (white GSD) the think the are wolves. and where i got them from. So tags with my addy on i do not want.
- By pinklilies Date 19.08.03 18:22 UTC
you could get the sort of tag where the address is on a piece of paper rolled up. you unscrew it. that way you are within the law, but it could not be read in passing by anyone stroking the dog! best of both worlds!
- By gundogsrbest [gb] Date 19.08.03 16:16 UTC
my dogs each have three tags, one saying that they are microchipped with the phone number of the chipping company, one with my home number on one side and my mobile on the other, and one with my vets number on it, with nine dog tags, two cat tags and two cat bells it gets very noisy at times more so at feeding time :)
- By liberty Date 19.08.03 16:29 UTC
If you often take your dog/s out of your local area, i.e holidays, long days out, shows etc. Then the address might not be that helpful (unless you've got a huge dog-tag to get all the info on), so I'm happier with home phone number inc STD code of course, and full mobile number, then if I'm not home, I can still be contacted.

  It's all so confusing, if I keep thinking of all of the pros and cons of this that and the other I think I will go mad.

Hi chaps- Just thought that I'd add my two pennies worth. Both of my dogs wear tags with my Surname, My postcode, My home telephone number on one side and on the other side they have my mums Postcode and tel number and my parents-in-laws tel number and postcode. (my mum lives near me so is my 'emergency' number, and when I am on holiday, my dogs go to my in-laws in Yorkshire). That way all the bases are covered without giving too much away and I dont have to keep changing tags when they go to stay with my mother-in-law. They are both microchipped and also wear separate metal tags with 'Microchipped-Please Scan' on one side and the telephone number to call on the other. (I found that the details on the plastic tags given to me by the micro-chip logging people rubbed off pretty quickly!). I was told by my dog warden, that a postal code is perfectly acceptable in place of an actual address. Cheers
