Hi,
I'm pleased you don't want to get rid of your dog!
Sarcasm is very hard to detect on these message boards, so forgive everyone for being harsh, everyone on here is passionate about dogs, and so many people have a callous throw-away attitude towards dogs which makes most people very angry. Although this isn't the case with you, it is with a lot of people.

You should get a lot of credit for caring so much about your dog at 15 years old, well done!

It does sound like your dog has problems with nervousness though, and you should consider getting expert help building his confidence. He's lucky to be so cared about, but it can't be nice for him being scared of everything.

Try and find a good trainer in your area who can help you. You can't punish or shout at him for being scared, that will just make it much worse. It's a very serious problem that Luka has, and it's not something you can really get assistance with over the internet.

Find a kind trainer near you, who can help desenstise Luka to the things he is afraid of. It will take time, and hard work, but it will be worth it in the end because he will be a much happier dog.

best of luck,

Jo

Hi

I have just read your second posting and your message seems to confirm what I suspected from your first - are you in the States? If so, I think your terminology has been misinterpreted by readers in the U.K.
You'd think that in speaking in English we'd all understand but, from expereince in living in the States myself, it just 'ain't so'.

I think this is why they thought you were a bit cold towards your dog and didn't understand your use of her/his being scared as 'annoying'. I also think that the use of the phrase 'chicken dog' is a common way of summing up a whole lot of behaviours over there without having to spell them out. So, I think you may have been misjudged.

You are doing the right thing in asking for help with your dog so keep up the good work - they can test us at times - but boy are they worth it - they're the best friends ever.

Elaine

P.S. Are you anywhere in/near Tn State? I recognise the Hi Yall! I lived in Knoxville Tn for a while and the Red Necks sure poked fun at my accent!!

Hi Sarah,
I'm so glad you don't really want to get rid of your dog - after all, you are supposed to be his best friend! Dogs are very good at reading our "body language" and if yours is inadvertently giving off "negative, rejection signals", Luka is going to become even more unsettled. The calmer and more confident you can become with him, the sooner he'll pick up on this and take reassurance.

Can you think of all the things he enjoys doing, so that you can boost his confidence a little that way?
:)

Luka 88,

You say ur dog is only 21 months old (according to your first post)...3 months short of being 2 years old. Please someone clear this up for me.
Is it possible to have done Agility, Tracking, Herding, Flyball and Obedience, all with in 21 months? I know for a fact they do not like to have a dog do agility until about a year old do to the jumping involved. To take obedience classes thats at least 6 months old. Junior is 3 years old and we are going to be reduing agility 2 for a refresher course. Another thing how can this dog do all this with the fear it has? I know this type of stuff builds confidence, at least it suppose to. This has helped junior alot. There was a dog in my agility class that was scared of everything even her own shadow. She was about 6 years old and by the time she was taken through the second agility class you could just see the confidence in her it was amazing. I myself know how long these courses take just to get ur dog good at them, sorry can't see all this done in this short of time.

I have just read ur other post.
Please some one clear this up for me.. ..I just find this hard to believe :(

A TROLL maybe, sorry just my own opinion :(

I was told you can't do agility untill they are 18months old so their bones will of developed proerly Cassie haas been doing agility for a few months and she loves it but it takes time. Flyball also takes time to learn Cassie is 2 1/2 and i have only just started looking at fly-ball

I don't know about the troll thing, maybe it is just a child! :) No offence to anyone but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the two.
- By dollface Date 17.08.03 19:55 UTC
Going by the last part of this post I don't think it is a child, just for how they talk/write ect. Just my opinion tho....This post is way to far fetched......Some one is bored thats how I feel....just bored :( sad

"OH YA AND I BET U DIDNT KNOW THIS BUT IM 15 YEARS OLD !!!""

Actually i think we could tell!! But please tell me, where do you find the time to do all this?! I do wonder how you manage to do all those activities if your dog is so scared of things as you said in your other post, especially if he is scared to play fetch with you. You said he didn't like new places, so how do you do all the activities you list? Also i thought you couldn't do most of those activities until at least 18 months old. I know my collie can't. In answer to your other post you really need to socialise him if he really is that scared. Have you taken him to your friends places before? You said that he goes everywhere with you with exceptions, so i presume he has been to such places before. If he has never really been to other people's places he is bound to be scared if he is of a nervous nature anyway. However being the owner of a nervous collie i would say you need some specialist help as a dog that barks like mad when approached may eventually bite if he feels he can't escape the situation. Perhaps your parents could help you find a good dog trainer.

"AND U THOUGHT MY DOG HAD IT BAD"
Well i'm afraid he can't be happy if he is so stressed all the time. Dogs aren't bothered by material things bought from dog stores.

I'm also 15 and i do alot with my dogs but Oscar who is nervous takes alot more time to do things like at training he sits and quivers so we've just found out about someone who specialises in nervous dogs. He certainly won't do agility coz he is scared or all the things and won't leave my heel. If she goes to school and surely has homework coz i do and i can't do it all with my dogs the only things i really have time for is agility in the week and at fun dog shows and i'm going to see if i can find somewhere that does fly-ball on a weekend. And her dog not wanting to play fetch would that not effect fly-ball
you can tell i'm 15 coz my spellings naff.
i think you should try a dog behaviourist the same as i am doing with Oscar and spend more time boosting his confidence.
- By Lorelei [gb] Date 18.08.03 14:10 UTC
I'm over 40 and my spellings naff sometimes too - usually when I'm typing in a hurry and the brain moves fasterthan the fingers -who cares about spelling ?
- By cassie N ollie [gb] Date 18.08.03 16:23 UTC
i type way to quick and fingers work before brain especially with big words or stupid little ones that sometimes you just can't get ya head around.

He he! That is just what i was thinking Cassie, how can she manage to fit 3 walks a day and all those activities in whilst being at school and doing homework? I know i certainly can't - although it would be nice. Where abouts is this trainer that specialises in nervous dogs just out of interest?
- By cassie N ollie [gb] Date 18.08.03 20:14 UTC
In Chasetown Staffordshire which is 10miles from b.ham,
My names Hannah dog is Cassie but no worries
i wish i had time to do all that with my dogs coz they would sure be the happiest in the world especially Cass who is agility mad and just loves new things as she loves working with me. What sort of dog do you have
- By dollface Date 18.08.03 23:51 UTC

Hiya
Dogs can start agility at 12 months, but they can start competing at 18 months. I also have a collie called Cas who is agility mad and also live in staffordshire, good luck with her.

hi gina yours is cascade isn't she
i saw her a a dog show a few weeks ago 1 at aldridge and 1 at Wasall
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 20.08.03 20:49 UTC
Hiya, Hannah, soz about the name mix up, i have an 18 month old Border collie cross smooth collie called Megan, who is mad to put it mildly, shes quite nervous and causes me all sorts of problems but i love her, and a 4 month old Golden retriever puppy called Ellie. I would love the time to do all those activities, but as we both know i don't think it is physically possible unless you do nothing else all day. I like the sound of that though!
- By cassie N ollie [gb] Date 20.08.03 21:23 UTC
It would be great i thjink i'd have the happiest dogs ever coz when 1 got tired i could do something else with one of the others and when they all got tired the first one would be ready to go again there would be so such thing as behavioral problems if they had that much to do
but hey we can all dream
