Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeder's kennel names?
- By OdinsMum [gb] Date 17.08.03 20:18 UTC
Hello,

Not seriously thinking about breeding but how a little confused by breeder prefixes/suffixes. I have a KC registered puppy registered in the name of the breeder we bought our little cuties from. If we were to breed from him, would we rename him and register this name with the KC,or simply come up with a kennel name for the puppies (if we got a bitch also) and any subsequent progeny? I have seen a few breeders talk about their foundation bitches and these dogs appear to have this breeder's name although they clearly bought the dog from someone else.

Hi,
You can't rename your puppy. He has his name, and that's it....except!! if you get an affix (for which you have to apply to the KC and submit alternatives, pay an application fee and annual maintenance fee) which you can pay to add to his original name. However, it is the breeder of the puppies (the owner of the bitch, not the dog) who registers the litter, and they would be registered with her affix, not yours. If you owned the bitch, of course, you would be the breeder, and the pups would be registered with your affix and the names you chose (if they were accepted by the KC).
Hope this is clearer than mud....

A foundation bitch is the bitch you start your line of breeding from. Obviously when you start you buy in your first bitch, then when she is bred, you keep the best bitch from the litter to start your own breeding line, these things take time, and a lot of hard work, learning by mistakes, as well as successes. Choosing the correct Stud Dog, with attributes to enhance the next generation, minimizing any faults, making sure you are not doubling up on faults, breeding them out instead, it takes years to get to what you want.

With respect Jude, you are experiencing quite serious behaviour and temperament problems with your dog at present, and he is only a baby! the LAST thing you should consider is breeding from him. The temperament on a Dobermann should be 100% reliable before even thinking about it, aside from that there are several health tests too. Don't mean to sound blunt.

Don't worry, we wouldn't consider breeding from him if we felt that he is unstable. I was just interested in general about how it worked with the names really as we just got his KC register book. As I said on the other board, we wouldn't want to fulfil anyone's dim expectations of dobies.

Thanks for the other replies, think i get it now!

Hi there well a Affix /suffix is a name which is your brand and only you can use choice a name can be eather where you live or the breed you have or name of your famerly.
There is a KC book of Affixs you can buy telling you all the names that have been taken.
When you have your own Affix you can add on to your own dog but only on the end of the name but if you show and your dog gets there Stud book number you cant add a affix on.
Another way you can put your own affix on a dog you have not breed it both parents carry your affix then you can add your affix to the front of the name eg If someone has a litter by a bitch you have breed and use one of your stud dogs carrying the same affix.

To clarify :a dog named Treetops Rover for ( at/to/of etc ) Windy Hill means that he was bred by the Treetops kennel and registered Treetops Rover and then bought by the Windy Hill affix owner who then had her affix added on to ther end of the name . Once a suffix (Windy Hill) has been added the name cannot then be changed again by any subsquent owners.

If the dog were to be sold again the new owner could apply to have the windy Hill part removed, and add their own affix if they wished, as long as it had not won it's way into the stud book. This has recently happend to a dog in our breed, but the new owner has not had their affix added as yet, so may not be doing so.

Not quite right. You can remove the Windy Hill Affix but you cannot add another. I do know because I had a pup of 11 months old returned and I applied to get the purchasers affix removed, but it specifically states that another affix cannot be added.

That 's right, I've just argued with the Kc over this as I have a bitch who I wanted to remove the suffix placed by her last owner and add my own. Unfortunately the only way I can remove it is to register the bitch back into her breeders name, then she could remove the suffix. However a new one ( my own affix) cannot then be added. It seeems a really silly way of doing things as both the breeder and the last owner are happy for it to be changed.

Never mind
