Can any body give me some advice. My 12 wk old bullmastiff puppy was fine when i had her at 7wks old. She was eating pedigree puppy complete, with scramble egg once a day. After a week i changed her to bakers puppy cause i always fed my old dog on that. When she was 10 wks she had her 2nd injection, 3 days later she had bad runs. for 2 days, vet told me to starve her for 36 hrs, i did then put her on boiled rice & chicken for a few days. it cleared up, but when i slowly returned her complete food soft motions appeared. This carried on for a futher 3 days. Took her to the vets, he said nothing wrong with her maybe a food intolerance, put her back on pedigree complete. So i did, it's now 5 days later her poo is like a soft cowpat, and she goes 3 - 4 times during the night which she never did before. She was wormed on drontal from vet, eating drinking playing all as normal. her motion hasnt been hard for 12 days now, any advice ?? You can email me angiealbutt@hotmail.com
Hi Guest
Sometimes if you give a puppy too much food it will be loose. Worming can also cause dire-rear in some pups.
I generally request that people who have my pups do not change their food for at least two weeks as everything in the pup's lives changes, people, environment, smells, drinking water and it can been too much if everything changes at once.
I would suggest cutting down on her food for a couple of days and if this does not help (or if she is looks at all ill or dehydrated) then take a sample of her faeces in a clean jar with her to the vet again

I had the same problem with one of my cavaliers. She was also on Baker's complete. When I first brought her home at 9 weeks she had bad runs which also had signs of blood. I took her straight to the vets where she was given antibiotics and put on a diet of chicken, scrambled egg and boiled rice. A week later she still was the same, after another trip to the vets and more antibiotics she was put back on a light diet for 3 days. She then had a couple of days back on bakers. only to have the runs again. After yet another trip to the vets we realised it was an intolerance to bakers and I was told to introduce her slowely onto a different food. I chose Iams as it is easy digestable (says on the packet). She is now on Iams and loves it, her "poo" is finally solid and I have had no further problems. It took me 4 weeks to finally get her right, so don't give up. If you are changing a pup's food you should do so gradually over afew days or your pup will get the runs anyway due to the sudden change.

Hi, for a quick fix try mashed potato - a Dutch locum Vet at my proactice recomended it to me a few years ago when I have a Cav. pup who just would not 'firm up'. Just boil the spuds (without salt added) and mash - dont add seasoning, butter or anything, just plain potato. Feed it for 2 or 3 feeds - usually find that after the first feed the poo takes on the mashed pot. consistency, and fixes from then on. Very simple and non-damaging. Have used it several times over the years now, and always succesful for this sort of thing (obviously, always seek vet advice for more serious 'runs'). Loads of my friends use this method now, too. Only adverse reports I have had are from friends in the USA where, apparently, Potatos are believed to be indegstibly by dogs, and non have tried this as they firmly believe in NOT feeding spuds!
bye

i too have heard spuds bad to dogs.not tried it.think i will leave it until i hear a bit more on the subject.
Cooked potatoes are fine - it's raw potatoes that are bad for dogs.
:)
A friend of mine uses a tea spoon of egg yoke to stop the runs but it has to be free range eggs (not the ones from the supermarket) from a chicken farm, although I myself use phospherous for the pups when weaning them on to solids. I dont seem to get any problems with the older dogs (touch wood) although I do feed a natural diet and not a complete. Hope you get it cleared up soon

I find that mashed potato and Bio Yoghurt does the trick for any runs, the Mashed potato firms things up and the Bio Yoghurt helps the digestive system to recover.
