Hi can I just say what a brilliant site this is for a first time dog owner it's such a relief just to know everyone else has teething problems(no pun intended) with their puppies. We picked up our tiny whippet puppy about a week ago his first night went really well, everyone had told us he'd whine all night but there wasn't a peek from him all night and his crate was still pee+poo free at seven in the morning, sorry to go on but as you can tell we're just a bit chuffed with him we've got a couple of questions firstly I know we've only had him a week and were just playing with him at the moment we are trying to show him what he's aloud to chew and not but at what point should we start lead training and basic commands. The other question is when he can go outside in about five weeks nobody seems to be able to tell us what sort of distance is ok for a puppy to walk ,I know these probably seem a bit basic but it's all new to us.
Thanks in advance
Steve.
Hi
I have a new puppy myself and started basic training straight away heel, sit, down ect (using tit bits, they soon get the idea) I started lead training when she had been with us about a week, I just attatched the lead to her so that she got used to the feeling of something around her neck and as she got more confident took it from there. With my breed I was told that however many weeks they are you halve that and give them that many minutes walk twice a day - 20 weeks = 10 minutes walk. There may be someone on who knows more about whippets though. Good luck.

Hi - and welcome to the world of whippets!! I've some whippet boards I can recommend you if you'd like some more whippet specific help. This board here is great though.
The whippet boards are:
K9community - a UK based whippet board found here: http://www.k9community.co.uk/forums
Whippet World - a US based board with people from all over the world found here: http://groups.msn.com/WhippetWorld
You need to be a member to post on either board:)
