Does anyone know why my Goldfish keep jumping out of their fishtank? I have had to put a lid on the tank now which is quite ugly. Is it the hot weather do you think? Jan

Hi
From when we had fish in a tank, I seem to remember that ours did this when it was very hot, and a more knowledgable fish keeping friend said that they were gasping for oxygen. They sometimes do that in an outside pond too.

ours used to do that when it was hot so we put an ice cube in the water(in a plastic bag) to try to reduce the temp and it seemed to work

Do you have an air filter in the tank,m we have one but if we turn it off they tend come up to the surface for air, luckily no none has jumped out yet i would get the shock of my life!!!

Or outdoor Koi used to do it in hot weather, we had to be very vigilany, in the end we lowered the height of the water so they couldn't make it over the edge!

Do you have a filter in the tank?? Is it cycled?? Goldfish often jump out of their tanks when they are irritated by pollutants (ammonia, nitrite or nitrate) If the tank is cycled with a filter then try changing 25% of the water more often, this will prevent nitrates building up to dangerous levels. If it isn't filtered then consider getting one and continue doing your usual total water changes until its cycled.

To keep goldfish tanks cool in this weather I freeze 2litre plastic bottles of water and float them in the tanks and also do 25% cold water changes a couple of times a week.

Hi,

Put your water level back to where it was and put as much oxygen into the
water as possible you cannot put too much in.

What size is your pond ?
what filter do you have ?

Your koi should not jump out even if your pond is right full?

Hi my partner keeps japanese koi and shows and does research etc we also have goldfish
The reason your fish are jumping is that warm water contains alot less oxygen
than cold water and during warm weather fish eat and therefore excrete alot
more waste.Change 25 % of water weekly as in a previous post.Do not put iceccubes
in full stop as this will suddenly lower the temp thus stresssing the fish or cold bottles
of water this could cause further problems later.

It is Ammonia and Nitrite that is the problem not Nitrate the latter being harmless plant foofood
and just gives green water.

I suggest you add an air pump to add oxygen into the water this may prevent you from changing the water so
often and also clean out your filter but do not wash the media with tap water
as this will kill the friendly bacteria use rain water.

Regards Briony :-)
