I read with interest the comments about the difference between working and show cocker spaniels but I would still like some advice. We met a couple today with a working cocker spaniel who do not "work" it in the true sense of the word - would a family with two teenagers, large garden and enthusiastic walkers be suitable for such a breed? We are keen to train but would not be able to "work it"?

Hi,
I don't have cockers, but I do have farm bred border collies. I can't be sure, but I think as long as you are prepared to give the dog a lot of physical and mental exercise, you shouldn't have any problems. From the sounds of it, you'd probably be ideal for a 'working type' dog.
It's worth bearing in mind that any dog that is bred to work, and doesn't have enough to occupy his or her mind, can become destructive.
Hope this helps a bit, I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along soon.
Good luck

Hiya
I have a cocker and she is very active...but in no way a working one, she is from show background...
however, from what you describe, what you can offer is perfect for most breeds really.
Do a whole load of research before hand and look into the best breeders.
Do you specifically want a working cocker? Cockers are not actually that hard to train, some people may say different, but I have always had a great deal of luck, they are intelligent, so go for it. Would you go into obedience trials?

Hi guest
Working Cockers can make good pets for the active family who can offer plenty of mental stimulation & training (plus exercise of course) but they are not for everybody. If you would like to chat to someone about whether a Working Cocker would suit you, give Mrs Rhodes a ring on 01273 89070. She is the Secretary of the Field Trial Section of The Cocker Spaniel Club & I understand she is v helpful :-)

I have four families that own w.c. and they come to my obe. club and they are all working well and make very nice pets but you must do things with them to keep them happy.
