i was wondering if any one could help me im despirate to find a small I.D tag fr my new puppy. But i want one with a bit of style for example a one with a cool design on i would be really grateful if anyone could help.

Thumper, by law your dog must wear a collar with its ID when its off your property.

Don't want to be a pain but why do most people on here like microchipping so much ?

I've always had mine tattooed, don't need an electronic reader to check them & before anyone jumps down my throat re their tattoos that they can't read, I can read all my dogs tattoos, even the old girls who had been tattooed for 13 years when she died & was done in the old green ink

And yes microchips do move & can fail

It is a matter of choice & I prefer the tattoo

What others prefer for their dogs is up to them

my dogs all have tags as well but only bone shaped ones nothing special.

Honey has a heart shaped tag from the local key cutters.

How does the tattooing work, is it only vets who can identify a dog from them, and are they painful to do?

Hi Hayley,
Generally tattooists come to your home and do your dogs there. The tattooist has a 'caliper' affair, like a pair of pliers, into which is put a selection of letters and numbers made up of pins. That will be that dogs individual number. Then special ink is smeared on the inside of each pup's ear flap, the caliper is squeezed onto the flap and held for (I think) 10 seconds then removed and more ink smeared on. All done. Pups squeal, as much because they don't like being held still for that long, but it does sting a bit. My adult bitch had it done and sat and wagged her tail!

The number is visible for anyone to read (the modern caliper is clearer than the old one) and the national tattoo register holds the details of all dogs on file - together with the breeder's details if they're done as a litter, so that if the owner moves house and doesn't update their details, the dog can be returned to the breeder, rather than just put into rescue.

I must admit, I'm not happy with microchips Moonmaiden. I've seen cases of chips moving quite considerable distances. I'm also not happy with the idea of foreign bodies in my dogs. I know they have been around for quite some time but I still feel, “No good will come of these new fangled things!”

The tattoos on my lot are unreadable (currently 4 tattooed) but I can find all five microchips.

I changed when I wanted them rabies jabbed, maybe not a high risk of rabies but at least I know that if it does come into this country they are protected.

Strangely enough our local Dog Warden can't read tattoos either She has never seen one she could read ! Even the ones on my dogs one of which everyone else can read from 5 feet away. Oh & yes her chips never ever fail & never ever move if they can't be read the dog owner is at fault.

Like I said it's a personal thing & not for myself or my dogs

We've had something in our local newspaper re 2 English Setters.
Mother and daughter pair youngest was 6 months old, went missing whilst out on a walk.
Mother came back and daughter didn't, these pair were inseperable.
Their owners seem to think that they were stolen, the difference apart from
their colouring?
Mother was tattooed, her pup was microchipped but not tattooed yet.

All my Boxers are tattooed, I had my pups done too.
My oldest girl now dearly departed still had a tattoo fully legible in green ink
at 10 years of age.
My current pair have the tatoo in black ink, my red bitch tatoo is fully legible.
My brindle bitch most can't read all of her tattoo immediately because her ears are hairier
than her mum's but I can still read the numbers and if someone found her they'd just shave
the hairy bit away from the tatoo :)

I've had friends who have had microchips move in their dogs, some ending up on their dogs shoulders
or legs. I guess it's like everything in life any system is only as good as the operator.
We can only go on personal experiences. Me I give the big thumbs up for tattoos

I think part of the advantage of a tattoo is that it is visible, whether or not it is legible. A potential thief can see that the dog has at least one form of permanent ID, and might decide not to steal the dog in the first place. A microchip is invisible, and only legible if you have a reader - without that it might as well not be there. I personally feel that both methods together might be the safest way.

Just out of interest who tattoos dogs? Where would I go about finding out for my area Cumbria? Never heard of anyone doing it and cant say Ive seen many dogs which have been tattooed locally

I think there's good/down sides to everything (tags come off, microchips sometimes move, tattoos can also be removed) - I think you have to assess which is best for your situation.
In my case, I have two microchipped dogs (came to me that way from their respective shelters), both have ID tags, no tattoos.
Sky screams when you stroke her ears, there's no way we'd be able to tattoo them.
Neither of their microchips have failed or moved, so that's good enough for me :)

Basically, it's collars and tags for all, and anything else is up to you!

The law is collar & tag, but permanently MARKED property has to be returned to the owner(like vehicles, postcoded bicycles etc)

Microchipped property does not legally have to be returned as my friend who had her mircochipped(& registered on Petlog:D)very expensive(£3,000+)triathlon bike nicked, she found out after it was found in a haul of stolen goods 300 miles away from where it was stolen & resold in a poliice auction. She spotted it at a race meeting but is powerless to get it back & neither can the insurance company because it isn't permanently marked:(

The police don't have to scan the bikes for chips & it's maker's nimber didn't count as the frames are stamped in batches :o

Must say I've never heard of microchipping anything other than pets - a bike? Maybe the police didn't check for a chip as most people use those invisible marker pens. How odd!
I would think if a microchipped pet was stolen though, and found by the police, they would check for a chip - or at least the shelter would, or the vets.

They can only scan of they have scanner & there is no legal obligation to do so. The BVA even have a ruling that if an animal is scanned at a vets by anyone other than the vet the registered owner should NOT be told

Did you not know that all the rare plants at Kew gardens are microchipped [$ recorded on Petlog, along with motor bikes, valuab]e object d'art, etc etc etc ??? You can have anything microchipped animate or inaminate microchipped & Petlog will register it

Not possible to marker pen the race bikes as they are coated with a finish to make them drag resistant or at least that what Jo told me & she is in the british triathlon team she should know. Her new one will be engraved before coating so that it can't happen again

Can't imagine spending over £3,000 on a bike tho' :D

I've tried putting a microchip in various objects (lawnmower etc) but could not read it with my reader, whether a more powerful one would work I don't know but I found other means to identify my inanimate property.

they do some real nice ones i got the 7 head tag but it is quite heavy and not really for a puppy.i bought one of those little tags like cats wear that you write on the paper then screw the lid on(if you know what i mean)
