Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / puppy biting lead when walking

My 11 month old american cocker has developed the habit of biting her lead every time she goes out for a walk. I make her sit to put her lead on and when I open the front door the minute she is out of the house she starts to bite the lead and does not let go of it. If I pull the lead she pulls harder like we are playing a rag game to see who can win, which is a game I play with her at home with her favourite toy her pink 'mouse' and by the way she loves this game!.

I think she might just be excited and a few minutes into her walk she stops and starts smelling everything on the floor as usual. I mostly take to the park round the corner from my house for a nice walk every morning and evening and also let her off the lead in the park for a run and play with one of her toys, which she loves. She never used to do this but just lately she does it all the time. I dont know how it developed or why she does it but does anyone have any ideas how to stop her biting her lead?

try getting a chain lead as she wont like the feel of it in her mouth

Watch chain leads. A tooth caught in a link of the chain could so easily be result in a broken tooth, I've seen it happen unfortunatly. I would never use one myself.

Get some Bitter Spray and give the lead a spraying. This will soon deter her.

Regards, John

Spray Bitter Apple on the lead....... Or anything else which doesn't smell/taste nice to her...... Don't turn it into a tugging match, simply turn around and go straight back inside each time it happens - biting lead = no walk.
