Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / puppy biting, new mum with advice!!!
- By harrys mum [gb] Date 14.08.03 18:49 UTC
Hi to all new mums/dads!!Heres how i've dealt with the kids and pupppy biting. Our pup is a nine week old springer spaniel, the kids are four and nearly seven.Firstly i treid all the advice books give eg alpha shake to make puppy submissive, that made him more aggressive!!!ouch. We have tried bitter spray on hands and kids legs...pup likes the taste. How have i reolved things?well firstly my kids now only touch the pup on his sides and not head, pup seems more likely to nip when head is touched(apparently dogs can find this threatening). They are encouraged to fuss dog when he wakes as he's more friendly at this time.Whilst fussing him we all have to say good boy(all dogs like the attention dont they!!).Now in the garden if the pup bounds over i tell them to stop dead in their tracks and repeat good boy good boy. This is reinforcing the good behavior when petted earlier. If he jumps/nips despite kids welcoming him i remove him and put him inside kitchen door, just for a minute or two. When let back out with us he's so much gentler.I know it may sound crazy saying good boy when he's maybe about to nip etc but its working for us.I've also noticed the bad behavior is worse when the pup is tired, much like my children i must add!!If i find the good boy is'nt working due to pup being tired i calmly remove him and place him in his crate. He does'nt see this as punishment as i never chastise him when placing him in his crate, after all i want him to like his crate.Hope this helps someone else
