Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / get dog off table
- By lily_lyne [ca] Date 14.08.03 19:30 UTC
I have a one year old cocker pup and he is well behaved except he keeps getting on the table, and taking stuff off (paper, sunglasses bank cards etc). I dont know how to break him of it, but i was in a pet shop the other day and i saw they had something for cats. Its a spray device that when the cat jumps on the table it sprays, i was wondering if that world work or if there was a better answer.
thanks alot lily lyne

Ermmmmmmm - don't leave things on the table?? If he gets up there enough times and finds nothing worth stealing, and gets no attention for doing it - he'll stop!

Put pots and pans on the table , at an angle so if they get touched they clatter very LOUDLY to the floor ;)

He will only get on the table a couple of times before he is put off :)

How high is the table ? and is it a dining table or coffee table ??
I would not let him up and keep an eye on him - what if he were to fall off ?? :(

I don't mean to sound flippant, but how does he manage to get on the table in the first place? A cocker isn't all that big, and if the chairs are always pushed under neatly he won't be able to use them as a step up. I know they jump, but doesn't he slip and get scared?

You could try setting up pyramids of empty cans etc to come crashing down and startle him if he tries it, but also, as digger said, if the table is kept clear there'll be no reward.

I agree with the others, keep him away if at all possible, or tuck the chairs in etc....

Double sided sticky parcel tape or similar run around the edge of the table can also be very effective, as dogs hate to touch the sticky .

LOL none of you have obviously owned an athletic dog, my littlest one, who is probably smaller then a cocker can easily jump straight from the floor onto a table if he wants to, ok bad habit admission, he likes to lie on the folded down table by the front window to watch the world go by.

Another alternative would be to keep the table really well polished and put a cloth on it, so that when he jumps on, he slides straight off again....

Or keep the door shut. (Not trying to be offensive, but once a habit like this has begun, prevention is often the only way to deal with it.)

Lily,

My dog will jump on the dining table if someone forgets to push the chairs back under the table. She also walks onto the lamp tables by the sofas. I am careful not to keep anything valuable pr dangerous to her on the tables. Regardless of what you do, when you are not around to watch her she will go back up onto the tables.

There is a product called a "scat mat" or something like that - most likely one of the internet pet suppliers sells something like it. It gives off a static charge which should discourage table walking. I do not know how it works, eg., it might work by batteries. However, I doubt you want a mat on top of your table.
