I have been given to understand that it is 'technically' illegal to display a sign that says "Beware of Dog" - (since I believe the Dangerous Dogs Act, which would suggest you are stating you HAVE a 'dangerous dog'. Therefore, new signs were introduced which said "Be Aware of Dog".
However, does anyone know if "INTRUDER KEEP OUT" (also showing picture of the breed) - would be acceptable?
I have seen others such as
Dog on Duty (with breed picture)
Caution I Live Here (with breed picture)
Dog Running Free
Intruder Keep Out (with breed picture)
Be Aware of the Dog
Your comments would be appreciated. Many thanks

Hiya Guest
I have never heard of this before (although, these days it wouldnt surprise me seeing as most things are illegal these days). I personally think it is a good idea to display a sign to that nature...it "hopefully" deters intruders, and also, it just lets people know that there is a dog there. My mum has a BEWARE OF THE DOG sign on her door and she has a cocker spaniel..and extremely soppy one too. It is left over from our golden cocker who could get a bit funny sometimes..but it is amusing anyway! :)
Would be interested to see what other peoples views on this are, and if anyone else has heard of it.

Sounds like our nanny state and politicaly correctness stupidity again. I'd put up whatever I wanted on my own property.

There was a post about 'beware of the dog' signs some weeks ago, it isn't illegal to put the said sign up; but if an intruder is bitten by your dog, you could be prosecuted, as the sign indicates you may have an aggresive dog. So some people by-pass this by having signs saying 'dogs running loose' etc etc, and could avoid prosecution if their pooch bites the s**ts who are lurking on your property.

This came up on another dog board and someones legal department looked into it. As far as I remember there is no such law refering to that sign or any other. Everyone has a duty of care for those entering their property, whether invited or not, signs are just a warning to people that there are dogs around.
Having said that it would seem silly to call or suggest ones own dogs are dangerous.

20!!!!!!!!! omigod! you must be busy!! I have 1 and she is a handful ( arrr, bless her, I love her to bits)
I have to agree though, it is my property and I shall put up whatever I want, even if it is a naked picture of Colin Farrell!...or shane from westlife.......or...(heh heh, now you've got me thinking!) :P
I also think it is crazy that you can be prosecuted or your dog can be PTS if he attatckes an intruder...what the hell was the person doing there in the first place...like that farmer bloke, who shot the teenager and went to jail and just been released..I think that is just madness!! Our laws are a mess and as far as im concerned he was well within his rights to shoot him...I would have, he shouldnt have been there (but everyone overlooks that dont they)
ooop......back to Shane!! :D

I was told this also and by a Police officer, also by a friend that is in Law and she said you are admitting that you have a dangerouse dog so if the dog did bite you cant say that you didnt know it wouldnt do that because you have a sign up saying keep out because of ! the dog !.

A police officer checked this out a while ago on this board, and if you go to the
"Dog signs and the law" thread on general board, you will find you are not admitting anything!
Alison
Please note: There were NO cases in existence in all the case law books available (published 2002) or on the computer (updated bi-anually) about a 'Beware of the dog sign' furthering your liabilityCut and pasted from original thread

Using the same analogy should you be injured by a video cassette could you sue the makers as they were admitting liability with their "Beware Illegal Videos" etc.?!
The term beware just means be careful; there is no implicit implication that your dog is dangerous nor should that be inferred by others. Signs such as dog bites first asks questions later may be different!
In any case whatever the circumstances as the law stands now anyone bitten by your dog whether they were trying to steal your car or burgle can, in theory, sue!

If you put up a sign saying something like "Caution Dogs loose" and with a picture of your dog -you are not actually implying that your dogs are dangerous/aggressive/threatening etc .
Should you get someone taking you to court due to an incident with your dog you can argue that your sign is only there to advise people/visitors to close the gate after them due to the dogs being in your garden etc .Plus if they still choose to enter the that is up to them .
The sign is not implying anything about the dogs behaviour/nature but you are still letting joe public/potential thieves etc know that a dog is on your property
