Warm salt water bathing twice a day. Make sure you dry it thoroughly afterwards or you will create more damage.
If not, then pop to the vet and get something like Fuciderm to treat it.
Try a buster collar too, or her will continue to do it, even in his sleep.
Good luck

I did this last night - I also shaved the fur where he has bitten it clean and fresh. Do you think I should give him a nice bath with some medicated shampoo and then fea spary him?

Yes, I meant to say, try to clip away the fur.
Did you mean spray with flea spray? If so...have you seen fleas on him, (is this the cause for the itching). If so, then it would be advisable to treat him (and the house if necessary)..but I would be very careful about where you spray it.
What spray are you using? Frontline? It is very strong and on raw skin it would send poor Max through the roof
A bath might not be a bad idea, be nice to cool him off in this weather too...
But make sure that fleas are the problem before you treat them, because if he is already being treated with a spot on, you could overdose (depending on which brand you are using).
Deffinatly continue with the salt water bathing..please dont forget to thoroughly dry him each time her gets wet or else you could end up with a nasty pyoderma.
I should think if you can keep him off licking and biting it and continue the bathing, it should start to clear up over the next couple of days...avoid swimming in dirty water too..dont know what infections he could pick up.
Hope he feels better soon!

Hi Claire
No problem. I hope he makes a quick recovery.

I used to be a vet nurse, so luckily can sort out most health situations.
Take care
