Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / My Samoyed is being aggressive
- By David - Malta [mt] Date 14.08.03 06:11 UTC
Hi

I have a nine month old samoyed. around a couple of months back she had some pain in her leg and when we tried to approach her she became aggressive. After a couple of days she was OK. From that incident onwards she remained a bit aggressive now and then. For example yesterday I took her out for a walk and when we came back she became aggressive. Other times she is really a cute but when she gets aggressive i hate the moment i brought her in.

It is unusual for a samoyed to be aggressive, thats why i am asking for advice.

Thanks

David

Sounds to me that she is still in pain made worse by exercise, has she been checked by a vet?

Sounds like a sick dog to me too. Have a good all over check done + x-rays if there is limb pain.

no, its ok with her limb now. she had the trouble only for a couple of days. she's full of energy. Sometimes she feels she has to be aggressive.

But has a vet confirmed that?

Yes he said that evrything is OK with her leg

A dog that is aggressive on occasion, has something wrong, it may not be the limbs but I would want that investigated, and also a full and extensive check including blood tests. Not only is it strange and unusual for the breed to be aggressive, as it is not all the time I would want to know why. It may be health or the way the dog is being handled. so after the full tests at the vets I think a person experienced in the handling Sammies should take a look at what is happening.

Edited to say have you spoken to your bitches breeder about this, they will want to know, even if they can't help.

When you say she is being aggresive, what do you mean by aggresive? Is she growling, biting, what are you doing to prompt it? Just approaching, stroking her or any other physical contact, is food involved?
Can you give us a bit more information?

Hi David,

It does sound as though the aggression was originally caused by pain. Now she has probably learnt that by being aggressive she gets her own way, and shes coming into adolecence so will become more bolshy.
Samoyeds are a very willful breed. Give them an inch........

The standard says
Displays affection to all mankind. Unprovoked nervousness or aggression highly undesirable.

As the other have asked, what type of aggression is displayed and to whom? Is she lifting a lip, growling or snapping?

I think you got it right. Probably by growling she expects things to be her way. These last three days she didnt growl at all. Usually she barks and growls and than she tries to bite ones hand. Sometimes she waves her tail as well while doing that and that makes me think that she could be taking it in a playful way. She sleeps indoors and when i go downstairs in the morning she's a real cute, she'll be very happy to see me. I pet her and rub her tummy, a thing which she really likes. Could be that she growls when sometimes she feels a bit annoyed indoors, who knows ?. That also happens when she sees new faces.
