We noticed today that our black bitch Labrador has a large distinctive black section to the side of her tongue and at the very rear. She is 2.5 years old. We had not noticed it before however today after exercise she was panting heavily and we could clearly see the black part right at the back of her tongue. Is this natural skin pigmentation or could it be something else?

I don't think it's anything to worry about, I've got a Flatcoat Retriever (also Black), and when she pants heavily a black spot is visible at the rear of her tongue. Lots of black dogs seem to have this; but if you're worried, have your vet check her out.
