Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / How many walks on lead?

I have a 13 week old Border Collie who went for his first walk today. We kept it to 5 minutes for the first trip out, but he was enjoying himself so much I felt really mean bringing him back in. We know he can't go for long walks yet, but would it be best to stick to two short walks a day or would he be able to manage more (he's on lead all the time)
Thanks
Sian

The more experience of the outside you can get into him without tiring him out the better - so 4 walks of 5 mins each is better than two of 10 mins, as you are doubling the number of times he's going to get put on the lead and go out of the gate....... At this age walks are more for experience than excercise, so try and arrange it so your puppy meets as many unusual things as possible - small children, old people, walking sticks, cars, trucks, other dogs - the list goes on and on......... Make sure all the experiences are rewarding and that YOU are in charge (don't let children crowd him etc) and it's far better to end with a puppy whose still full of go and enjoying the experience, than one whose knackered and starts to associate being outside with being made to walk and walk until he's too tired to notice what's going on

Good luck
