Hi, Can anyone shed any light or give some info on availability of a Miniature Yorkie/Shih Tzu Cross. We saw someone with one in Bristols Broadmead shopping precinct. We gave him our number but we have not heard anything yet!!!. Thanks in anticipation.

If you want a crossbreed, go to the pound - why on earth would you want to encourage cross breeding?!! For goodness sake, this is getting out of control

as chloe said there are many desirable crossbred in rescues and sanctuaries....why encourage a breed like this?
Surely this is very wrong :( but accidents can happen :(

Thankyou to Chloe H, Bulldogowner and Corso Girl, I did not realise that this was a bone of contention, I simply asked a question and did not expect to receive a sermon on the ethics of cross bred dogs. It must be nice to sit on such high moral ground and be able to judge others so easily. We did not want a pound hound, we simply saw this dare I SAY IT CROSS BREED AND LIKED IT. Cross breeding has gone on for centuries and will continue to do so. If we procure this cross breed it will be wanted and well cared for. It is a shame that people such as yourselves cannot see this for what it is instead of being blinded by your attempts at breed purity. Oh to live in a perfect world!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankyou for all your non-existent help and please dont bother to reply as I will not be using this site again.

Welcome to the forum SteveHutch. Can anyone offer something constructive to this thread please?

No I'm afraid I can't Admin... All the replies above echo this whole site and I dont blame Steve for leaving so quickly... I've been popping in and out of this site for about 18 months and to be honest it never changes and I really do think it is quite sad. The regulars on here always think the worst of any new comers - some of them asking for reasonable advice and others obviously just dont know any better!
To be perfectly honest I have never seen 'young dogs' in the pounds and rescue centres near me! They are all very old. or have problems or the owners have died and there is noone else to look after the poor things... Yes we have a rescue dog and also KC registered dogs... I'd also like to say that NOT ALL dogs in the pound are crossbreeds... there are plenty of purebreds in there. But i know for one if one of my purebreds had to be rehomed for whatever reason she wouldnt beable to go back to her breeder because she is ill and had to have the ill dogs put to sleep and rehome alot of the others as she is no longer able to cope due to ill health...
Attitudes on this site are so black and white-yet life is often hues of grey...
You will be able to do an awful lot more good being friendly and helping in a nice way rather than attack everyone who dares log on!!!
cmon - ducking for cover now ;-)))

Well, there are plenty of crossbreed puppies in my local rescue kennels, so I am not sure wheree you get that from.. all accidental matings (according to the people who drop them off). There was a gorgeous Lurcher x Weim there 2 days ago - she's been thrown out because she was "too much of a handful".
Whats wrong with a Yorkie, or a Shihtzu? At least that way you will be able to compare breeds, compare examples, get good advice from people who LOVE their breed and care enough for an accidental mating not to take place? Why encourage irresponsible breeding? I cannot understand it? There are thousands of dogs in the pound, puppies, that people don't want because they don't know the temperement, can't see the parents, don't know how big they will grow etc...so why not choose a breed that you can research, discuss, view several examples of and possibly even show? Why encourage more accidental matings? Its beyond me.
Edit to say: I don't think it was an attack - just frustration.

hi,
i try not to think the worst of any newcommer on the board.....it wasnt so long ago that i was one myself :)
Crossbreeds come in all shapes and sizes , old and young ,but i really dont understand peeps that do it deliberatly...there is a pound thats quite local to me that has lovely crossbreeds up for re-homing , if Steve would like me to e-mail him privately with the address i am more than willing to help if possible.
I am sorry if my post has caused offence :)

:-) cheezy grin...
maybe its the hot weather getting everyone a bit hot under the collar...
Btw i wasnt particularly aiming my comments at the two of you - just in general...
I think people generally receive advice better if it comes across kindly... :-)
I've never seen a shihtzu cross yorkie though! nor a cockerpoo for that matter -though they seem to be quite popular these days too.
But remember in the old days when they crossed pugs to shih tzus and cavs to those tibetan spaniels???

Personally, I can see why people might cross breed for a specific purpose (working dogs etc)... but I can't imagine wanting a cross breed myself (apart from when my kids grow up and I shall then have rescue dogs exclusively). Whenever I have changed breed of dog I have enjoyed looking into the different breed characteristics, what the dog should look like when older, whether its a breed thats good with children etc... then, I go and see breeders, talk about the breed and even visit shows... How can you do that with a cross breed - surely thats just cosmetic - i.e he looks cute and fluffy/big and mean where can I get one? I'm not saying thats what this poster was saying, but thats the general tone of *some posters* :)

OOooh me too chloe - in fact i become quite obsessed... We have a gorgeous Lhasa from the rescue centre who I am sure has been a stud dog and showed at some time just from the way he is!! Although he came to us with bad eyes and is now completely blind bless him. If he is a cross which i highly doubt then he's prob crossed with a Shih tzu i imagine - but looks all lhasa to me - and very well made up... would be interesting to know what happened to his eyes. He was found wandering around sheffield.

:) I become obsessed aswell!! lol. your lhasa sounds like he has a great home now :)
with regards to the attitude the poster got back from us ...well, i think that can be justified in that it would be seen to be positively welcoming compared to what a true yorkie or a true shih tzu breeder might say if they were to ring one up!! ;) I have nothing against cross breeds, I just can't see why anyone would encourage it... it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth (accidental mating...puppies advertised in the paper... £200 quid in the back pocket of the "breeder").

There are thousands of puppies needing homes - nearly every rescue centre near me is overrun with them.
And as for them all being older dogs with health/behavioural problems, I have two healthy young dogs from rescue centres!
Patience, patience and more patience. If someone is in such a rush to get a pup that they will buy one from a backyard breeder, they might not be patient enough to train it ;)
Thousands of dogs needing homes, why are looks and availability more important to some. There could be the perfect dog for them out there, but not the colour they want, and not available straight away. Should this dog miss out on a home because his fur was wrong, his face wasn't the right shape, and he wasn't available there and then?
It's so sad to see people rushing out to buy crossbreeds, or even pedigree dogs, without checking through rescue first. Could it be because they don't want the homecheck?
I'd like to know why the original poster would prefer a crossbreed dog bred on purpose rather than one from the shelter? No difference whatsoever - if someone is breeding these dogs on purpose for money, you can almost certainly bet your life they wont look after it as well as a good breeder who sticks to a breed! Or even the rescue shelter ;)

SteveHutch - have you seen the amount of puppies recently bred because they have a fashionable name? At the moment, people seem to be breeding just to fill a gap for something "unusual" in the market... if you saw a dog you liked the look of in the street, then maybe you would see a dog you liked in the rescue kennels too?
BTW - there's nothing wrong with pound hounds :)

I don't normally get involved with threads like this, but as we are on the topic of cross breeding, I read an ad on the Ad-mart site the other for Bulldog x Shitzus!!! Guess what they were calling them???

Yeah - I saw it

Thats the kind of breeding that really get my goat - that, along with selling pups at car boot sales... they are turning dogs into cashcows; indisposible, inanimate objects to be bought, played with, get bored with, and pass on

Where did you see pups sold at boot sales? These folk need C--------G. Did you note the car REG ?

Sorry if replies to people upset, but we use the board because we care about dogs, if asked about someone deliberatly crossing or encouraging crossing for no other reason but money, then I for one would no be true to myself if I said 'what a good idea are there any bitch owner who will mate there bitch to produce the pup this person wants'.
So excuse us if we are a bit passionate about our dogs but we would not bother to post at all if we were not. We do try to be courteous, but with the same sort of question day after day, sometimes we just loose it a bit. ;)

SteveHutch (although I don't know why I'm bothering to write this if you aren't going to read it..), the reason people get heated is because they
care about dogs!
As I'm sure you're aware, different breeds are prone to different problems. When you cross two breeds together, there is a chance that the pups will be prone to the problems of
both breeds! I'm sure you'll agree that is not a good thing to do! Yet people go ahead and do it, seemingly without a thought for the genetic consequences, and then try to con gullible people into thinking this is 'rare breed'.
That's what gets people cross!
And then, when these unpleasant facts are pointed out,
we get the blame for not saying what you want to hear! Well, I'm sorry, but that's how it life is - we're not going to lie to make you feel better! That would be stupid and pointless.
:)
