I was wondering what would be the best thing to use for keeping a springer tangle free, I'm using an ordinary comb at the moment but Heidi is losing her short puppy coat and I don't think the comb is going to be much use as her coat gets longer, a couple of people in the village trim their springers coats with electric trimmers, it looks functional, but I'd rather spend some time each day getting the tangles out, behind the ears are the problem areas they seem to tangle in no time if you don't keep on top of them. she loves being groomed by the way, if she could purr she would.
Thanks

Hi Robert
On my goldens I use a "slicker" brush - particularly while they are moulting as now. It works a treat on the fluffy long hair at their ears.

Thanks I'll get one of those while I'm up at the farmers merchants.

I have 2 springers and the best thing for tangles etc. is the dematting comb that you can buy in the pet shop, it looks fairly weird, about 6/8 curled blades that you can comb through behind ears, remove matts and dead hair. A great cheap alternative for removing dead hair that is not yet matted, especially puppy hair, is a metal comb with an elastic band threaded in between the teeth, sounds weird but it works. Doghealth also what they call a defelting comb which is also good for stripping dead hair and tangles -

Good luck, I don't have my springers clipped but however my youngest always looks like a burst couch and I am very often tempted.

We have 5 springers and so far have only had to get the girls clipped, they seem to have different hair to the boys and have a lot more curls. Behind the ears is always a problem with springers and every day grooming is possibly the only answer. Since having the girls clipped their hair has grown back all fluffy infact one of them looks like a giant rug.
