Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / stud owners keeping fee
- By kane [gb] Date 10.08.03 09:37 UTC
Can anyone explain why that if your bitch does not get pregnant the stud owner can keep your stud fee?? I have just paid £1000 for a stud visit and am told that the owner will still keep the fee if she(my bitch)does not concieve! I paid this amount because he is the top dog in the u.k in his breed and complimented my bitch perfectly, but crikey its a lot of money to lose!!!

You are paying for the service of the dog having puppies is not guaranteed.

If the bitch does not conceive and the dog is a proven stud, then there can be a number of reasons why the bitch did not conceive:

The mating took place either to early or to late

The bitch conceived but due to many reasons re-absorbed the puppies

The bitch is infertile plus numerous other reasons

None of those reasons are the fault of the stud dog owner weho will have done everything in their power to ensure that their dog is fit healthy and fertile, so therefore the stud fee is non returnable,

Most owners of Stud Dogs will offer a free return at the bitches next season, so therefore you get a second chance of puppies

I usually recommend that bitch owners either have a blood test or swab done to determine ovulation (particularly if the travelling long distances is involved) and certainly if you are paying a stud fee of £1000 then the amount that would cost you would be worth it, it cuts the odds done on conception.

the stud owner has the right to ask for the stud fee upfront, its up to you if you take your bitch to him, -although i have never ever charged a fee before the bitch was found to be in whelp, ---i wouldnt feel comfortable taking £1.ooo even if entitled to it if the owner was sat there without any pups, :( plenty will have different veiws but thats mine.!!!!!

I was also under the impression that the stud would return at the next season should there be no pups. Do you have any form of contract at matings or is i verbal or a gentlemans agreement ???
- By dizzy [gb] Date 10.08.03 10:39 UTC
lel, its normal for the bitch to go to the stud dog, not the other way, its usual for the offer of a free return but might not always be possible,

The owner of the stud doesn't have to allow you to use them again for free, I know that I always have done, but there is no law saying that this has to be done.

£1,000.00 is a lot of money though, have you asked whether you could try again next time?

Hi Kane,
Just to repeat what the others have said - the stud fee is merely payment for the services of the dog (ie the mating) - it is not payment for a litter of puppies. On your stud contract, or receipt, the conditions are usually laid down, and these usually include the proviso that if no pregnancy results, a free service if offered at the next season, subject to various conditions.

ive just read its a boxer, and a boxers stud fee is £1000, -cant believe it, theres some big winning dogs with fabulous lines out there, surely youve been charged over the top, ??????

Hi,

I may be being over cautious here but I wouldn't part with £1,000 without having a written contract that states clearly what happens if there are no pups from the mating. Not to mention a lot of other things £1,000 is a lot of money the price of a proven stud with cc's and winning pups already to his name in my breed Staffs is approx £200 although I might be slightly out I don't think I am by much. Stafford pups sell for approx £400-£450 and that seems to be a reasonable price for a stud owner to ask.

I'm assuming that you have a contract that you've both signed redarding the mating?

Whilst echoing the sentiments good luck with the litter, I think everyone (especially newbies) need to remember that there are no hard and fast rules regarding stud fees. You MUST sort out all the details before the mating, and preferably get them in writing. Different breeds have different conventions which are usual, but the individual stud dog owner can lay down whatever conditons and fees they think fitting - it is up to the bitch owner to consider them, and agree or go elsewhere as they see fit. Stud fees seems to cause much disharmony and split up between one time friends, because both parties have assumed something different.

bye

Phew £1000!!
Does that mean the pups will be worth £1000 each?
Normally the price reflects on what the pups are worth.
The stud owner is entitled to ask for money up front and just for services only. But this is something you should of agreed to first. I always give a return free mating with our dog. However I know many people do not do this now in my breed Weimaraners.
I would be very careful to part with £1000-00.

Hi Kane
Can I ask which dog you used please (just being nosey really :D I own a Neo)

Hi Nutkin
Depending on which stud dog Kane has used the stud owner could very well have advised to sell for £1500.

Alison
Edited to add: Kane I thought you'd had your dog mated in May??

And for the benefit of other board member's the stud fee for a Neo is £1000 regardless of show status ie: top dog or not the fee is still the same

- By angienelly [gb] Date 11.08.03 13:53 UTC
It seems like alot of money & i know i wouldn't pay that stud fee for any breed i can get 5 years of matings to one bitch to a champion dog in my breed for that money!
Neopolitans my friend tells me(she used to breed neo's) are selling from anywhere between £1500 & £2500 per puppy depending on whether it is wanted for guard purposes or possible show:confused:.
Bye
Angie.

Looks like the NEOS will be "just what the puppy farmers ordered".Great huge barns to house them also.Welsh Assembly grants to get them up to scratch!!!!!

£1000.00 stud fees and up to £2000.00 per puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They will be laughing all the way to the bank!!!

Me thinks not BUT knowing how much bad luck responsible breeders get and the good luck irresponsible and non caring breeders seem to get....anything can happen.
