Vivitonin-What is this medication. how and why is it used, dosage
side effects, etc. does it fall under a different name for human

I Have a little experience of Vivitonin. My Irish Setter bitch was put on it in 1994, after she had what I thought was a minor stroke. In hindsight I think it was probably a transient ischaemic attack, she made a good recovery on Vivitonin and so stupidly, I stopped the tablets. She then had another TIA, and the vet said once the Vivitonin is started the dog should remain on it permanently. Holly was 12 years old at the time and she was on the medication for two years. She was eventually put to sleep when she continued to have TIA's on the drug at aged 14 years.
There are similar drugs available in human medicine, I'll check the BNF at work later today, and post again.

Edited to add, Vivitonin improves the blood suppy to the brain.

My 14 year old Maremma was put on this when he had an attack of vestibular syndrome. I thought he had had a stroke - he basically collapsed and then kept falling over sideways as if he was drunk. His eyes were rolling from side to side and he was incontinent. I called the vet out expecting him to have to be PTS. She prescribed vivitonin and within about 5 days he made a complete recovery with no side effects and is still with us. It increases oxygen to the brain I think - but don't know whether there is a similar drug for humans.

Last i heard, they were thinking about licensing it for people but that was well over a year ago now. I'm not sure what has happened about that.

My BSD was on it for the last 2 years of her life, after her stroke, and a friends Lab cross was on it for roughly the same amount of time. My dog was given what i can only describe as a "boost" in energy and enthusiasm, only slight but enough to really improver her life :)

She had a complete recovery after her stroke during which she was nursed at home, I do believe the Vivitonin helped enormously.

Well, it would seem to me that the nearest equivilent in human medicine, is the group of drugs known as inotropes. These drugs maintain circulation, and consequently oxygen supply to the major organs, and support blood pressure.

My old terrier girl was on vivitonin for several years and we really do think it improved the quality of her life. She lived to be 17 :)

Vets opinions on it seem to vary, the first vet I mentioned it to said she thought it was as much use as a "sugar pill" but would prescribe it if I wanted her too! I'd heard good things, so went ahead! So pleased I did :)
I'd use it again with an older dog, it certainly improved the quality of my old girls life :)
