We have just adopted a 3 year old black lab.She seems to be on heat, but we wouldnt know as we have not had a bitch before, can anyone give us any advice.

Hi, is she cleaning her self alot more? get some cotton wool and wipe her and that way you will see if there is any blood? because some females are very good at keeping clean it might be hard for you to see any thing but there is some times drops of blood on the floor? did you get her from Lab rescue if so ask them, in the mean time dont let her go any where near a male dog for a good 3 weeks keep her on a lead and watch her at all times when in the garden. do you realise your bitch is fertile AFTER she has stopped bleeding so please don't think its safe when the bleeding stops.As Jackie says keep her away from males for at least 3 weeks.
