Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / how old should she be?
- By Betty [gb] Date 08.08.03 21:25 UTC
I may have asked this before, but i'd like to make sure i've got it right!
my bitch has just turned one year old, had one season at 6 months and is due for one right about now. She's a cavalier king charles spaniel.
When is the right time to breed from her? I have looked at all the pros and cons, and decided that i would like to breed from her. all i need to do is buy the whelping bed and equimpent to make everything right in preperation for the puppies arrival.
sorry if i've gone into to much detail but i would really like to get it right as it is my first time at breeding!
Betty :)

Best to wait until she's about 2 years old, and has passed all the necessary breed-relevant health checks for hereditary problems (a basic vet-check is not good enough).

I think heart testing is a definite must in cavaliers, please take great care breeding. You only have to read through recent threads to see how many bitches die due to breeding.

I would be guided by your breed club, it is often considered reasonable to breed these smaller breeds earlier than 2 but of course only after the appropriate testing has been done.

Thanx for all your help! :) I'll wait till she is two and a bit but get all the health checks done well before! Both her parents were heart testesd and were fine so ours should be too!
thankyou for your help! :D
