Hi there,
as you may know I have recently adopted a DDB from the UK. Odin is KC registered but the ex-owner gave me the dog for free and later got back to me, saying that if I want Odin's papers I would have to buy them off him. Now, I am not interested in his papers whatsoever. My question is: Odin is a cryptorchid, the ex-owner said he didn't know. I will have to have him neutered asap as he's already three and the risk of cancer is high. Shouldn't that be made known to the kennel club as cryptorchism is hereditary?

Who are his dam and sire and where/who did you get him from?

He's a divorce victim. His KC name is Naseem's/Nasim's Lad, sire Redgrit Pioneer, dam Laruscade's Mandy. Born August 2000. But that's not the issue. I have since heard that the KC is not interested in this kind of information...

I have a bitch whose sire is Redgrits Pioneer. We have bred her and none of the males have suffered this problem.
Laruscades is a very good Kennel so would have thought if they were aware of any problems they would have put restrictions on any stock.
Certain problems can sometimes be hereditary but that does not always need to be the case.
For example Hip Displasia can be hereditary or environmental/trauma.
With Bordeaux and other breeds that have large litters I suppose the chances of defects within a litter are going to be higher. :-(

Cryptorchidisum, whether unilateral or bilateral is an inherited condition and as such the dog should not be bred from. Although some puppies do not exhibit the condition they can still be carrying it. The condition is worse in some breeds than others, I know several in Goldens and a few in Labradors.
Any operation would need reporting to the KC to request a permition to show, (But would not receive one because it would be hiding a fault). But apart from that the UK KC would not be interested. (I don't know about the IKC though Sarah)
Regards, John
