Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Naturediet Question
- By chaliepud [gb] Date 05.08.03 20:18 UTC
My two dogs have taken well to the change over from dry food to Naturediet, my only concern is knowing that I am feeding enough. Dylan is 36kg and they recommend about 3.5 packs a day which seems an enormous amount of feed ( he is 5, not very active and with arthritis in his elbow).
At the moment I am feeding him 2 packs a day over 2 meals, like my other dog who is 28kg, and they both seem happy. How will I know if they are not getting enough? - is the cat in danger??!!! :)

Hayley,

If you can feel their ribs with light pressure along their sides they are fine.

By the way, I debated about feeding Naturediet to my dog. I read the ingredients on the pack and they sounded yummy. I decided not to buy Naturediet - but to cook my own dogs food, which is what I do now. I make chicken with rice and veg. If I am going to make meat for dinner, like a steak or something easy to take slices off, I give her that for her dinner (raw) with veg. A minor problem my pup had with soft stools has completely disappeared. Bought a Pitcairn book which gives recipes. The Burns web site also has a recipe. Also a link to an interesting article on BARF.

I add a little dry food to my home cooked dog food, mostly because I got a great deal at a show recently and am not going to just dump it!

I cannot feel their ribs as much as I would like to :) so they are on an amount of food I think should allow for a little weight loss, I just hope it is not too little, although they are getting so little exercise at the moment due to the heat I don't expect to see a difference just yet! Roll on the cooler weather!

I wouldn't mind cooking their meals but I really don't have the time, what with the kids, dogs and a new pup on the way (hopefully) so Naturediet is really the next best thing, will have to wait and see how economical it is

Thanks

Hi Haley

Min who is a big Lab girl is now on three packs a day but she is going for a good 3/4 hour walk a day at the moment very early in the morning !! She is also getting carrots and fruit as treats and is now just the right weight for her age and build.

We had her initially on two but have increased it as her energy levels have increased. She is looking in tip top condition !!

Thanks Lucy

I think I will stick with 2 packs for Dylan for a while, he isn't acting half starved after eating (like he did when I tried to cut the dried food down a little bit!) and he does get the odd treat - living with 2 small children I think that is unavoidable - I am looking forward to giving them some decent exercise, poor dog really cannot cope with the heat at all, he is so lethargic. Did you notice your dogs drinking leass after the changeover to Naturediet? They seem to be drinking very little, even with the heat.

By the way, many congratulations on your new addition, I hope she isn't finding the heat too awful - she must think she was born in Africa!!!

Hayley,

Dogs due tend to drink less on the natural diet without a doubt..

Thanks Lucy

I tried to give the dogs ice cubes yesterday and they looked at me as if I was mad - althoough Honey will lick them if they have been in my Pimms! Maybe I should make some Pimms lollies - yummy!

Glad to hear Indi is doing well, I was lucky mine were born in cooler months, it is such a worry when they are tiny as they are no good at regulating their temp. Still, as soon as it gets a bit cooler you can put pretty little dresses on her! Unfortunately my 2yr old horror/angel refuses to wear dresses or skirts now, although she still likes pink - at least for the moment!!!

Enjoy the rest of Indi's first summer!!
