when a dog has puppes, how do you get a pedigree for them? do you get them from the kennel club? do you have to fill it in yourself and if you do, wouldnt it be easy to make it up and change things? and when you register your dog do you choose the name or do the new owners?

sorry but i havent got a clue about all this! thanks a lot for anyone kind enough to help :)

Think you had better join us Guest. Not sure if you mean the pedigree of your puppies which is the dams pedigree + the sires or if you want to know where you get the stationary to write the pedigree on?

Hi
i you mean a pedigree as in a written record of a dogs ancestors, you can buy the blank certificates and fill them in yourself. However as you say this can be falsified.
The only sure way of knowing your dogs ancestors is to buy a KC registered dog.(not to be confused with dog lovers registration). When you breed a KC reg dog and bitch there is a form to complete(by the breeder) that will register the pups.A pedigree certificate can then be obtained for the pups from the KC.
As Jackie says why noy register with the site and discuss your question more

how do the kennel club know your dogs pedigree? im now confused. do you send them your dogs pedigree as well so they can get you the litter of puppies pedigree?

The Kennel Club Computer holds records of pedigrees for all dogs registered with them. Therefore when a breeder applies to register a litter the Dog & Bitches registered names and KC reg. numbers are given on the application form, this means that if the breeder or a puppy buyer applies for a KC printed pedigree once the pups are registered then the pedigree is simply printed off the computer - the database being update by this new generation. However, there is currently absolutely noi guarantee that the pedigree is a true and accurate repesentation of the pups ancestry, as all these details are dependant on details given by the breeder in the first place. Of course, the vast majority of breeders are honest and reliable, and are keen to ensure the integrity of the breed records, but the system is open to abuse by the "fringe" element. either deliberatly falsifying records or being unsure of the parentage (eg 2 different males may possibly have mated a bitch).

All KC registration documents include the wording that accuracy cannot be guaranteed. A longstanding and ongoing discussion is taking palce about DNA testing/positive identification (microchip or tattoo) to ensure that pups are actually the issue of their registered parents.

Of course, as the other respondents have stated, you can also buy blank forms to fill in your own pedigrees or do them on your computer. Hope this makes it all a bit more clear, even if it cant reassure you about the absolute veracity of pedigrees.

Cassie, the Kennel Club has records of all the dogs registered with them for over a century. If you tell them a dog's registered number, they can access its pedigree. The records are continually updated by people registering their litters. That is why only puppies with both parents already registered can also be registered (except in the special circumstances when a new breed is accepted.)

The Kennel Club registers every dog with a different name (providing at least ten years have elapsed since it was previously used and it had not gained a stud book number) and an individual registration number.

The KC publishes the puppies registered every quarter in the BRS (Breed Record Supplement) which anyone is entitled to buy and therefore it's records are open and available to breed genealogists/historians/anyone who is interested (and who is willing to pay for them)

Prodiving the parents are registered with the KC then they (or anyone who collects pedigrees for a particular breed) will be able to confirm the paper version of your dog's pedigree.

OTOH

Other registeries will take your money and provide a pedigree made up of whichever names you desire
These are not available to anyone other than the person paying the fee as they are patently false and therefore worthless except to innocent puppy buers who are fooled by these fraudulent pedigrees (having seen a few I KNOW they are false)
You can change the names of the dogs in these false registeries as you go along if you wish to

~~

Do you have a puppy or litter of puppies or are you planning a litter? Are both parents registered and with which registery (KC, DLC etc)?

If you explain a bit more about your particular question we may be able to answer specifically :)
