My bitch is now 6 weeks pregnant.
Last week I noticed when she peed she would loose a very small amount of blood. I thought this was a touch of cystitis and took her to the vet for a scan to check everything OK with pups and confirm what I thought. I saw at least 4 pups on scan - our vet only scans to confirm pregnancy and that there is more than one. He does not give numbers. He checked her over and agreed he thought it was cystitis. This was on Thursday. She has been on a course of Synulux since then.
It had seemed to have cleared up HOWEVER, when I let her out this morning she peed and I noticed dark blood again - like the blood they get after having a litter :-(.
When she came in I checked her rear and there was still some stringy blood there.
My worst fear is that it could be a placenta detaching :-(
Has anyone else experienced this before and if so what was it?
If it is that she is aborting can anything done to stop this - like with humans???
We are desperate for this litter and she has missed on 2 previous matings :-(
I am going back to the vets this morning with her but thought I would ask fellow breeders on Champdogs for their opinions too :-)

Hello Staffie. Bitches will abort between 45-55 days usually so it could be that this is what is happenning. You mentioned that she has missed twice previously, I don`t want to frighten you but did you have her swabbed and tested for CB before she was mated originally.
It could be that she did not miss on the two previous occasions but had reabsorbed the puppies. This usually takes place between the 32nd and 44th day as far as I understand.
Early embryonic deaths can also be put down to thyroid problems as well as bacteria in the uterine tissues.Your vet can explain this to you better than I can.
Another agent we need to be VERY careful to check for is TERATOGEN and some veterinary medicines have know teratogen capacities...including CAROBYL,which is a flea treatment.
I would like to suggest that anyone intending to breed should have a guarded swab sterile culture done on the bitch between 7 and 10 months prior to her first season so that her normal microflora is identified. Testing for this should then cause less heartbreak all round.
I hope this is not happenning to your girl . Please keep us informed..

Hi, you mentioned in your post about some flea treatments containing Carobyl. Do you know if Frontline flea treatment is safe to use on a pregnant bitch?? Would appreciate any advice.

A friend of mine, who breeds cockers, this happened to both of her girls.....day 38 first girl passed mucousy blood for a couple of days, vet told her she was miscarrying, pregnancy continued normally and she had 7 pups. Second girl again day 35 this time looked like she was back in season, this lasted 5 days on and off..........discharge stopped at day 41 and she went on to have a healthy 7 pups too. Her vet said sometimes this just happens due to the expanding uterus, but she was right to take her to the vet and get it checked out.
Fingers crossed for you and your girl that it's just the same as my friends girls...............it still doesn't stop you worrying though :-(
Good luck, let us know how you get on at the vets

Thank you all for your replies.
I have just got back from the vets. He examined her and re-scanned her. He said the pups had grown nicely since last week and the heartbeats were clearly visable.
He seemed to think that she maybe losing a puppy that may not be viable - mother natures way.
Incase her cervix is slightly opend I am to keep her on Synulux for the duration of her pregnancy.
She was swabbed before one of the times that she missed and was given the all clear but put on synulox all the same. She also had a 5 day course of synulux prior to mating this time. The two times that she missed we went to a Champion dog and only had one mating - so to be fair that does not give the best chance of conception as each time they were slip matings :-(. Both times she missed we had her scanned at 28 days and there was no pregnancy so don't think she caught and aborted, unless early on??
We have used a different stud do this time and more matings :-)
I only have to go back to the vet if she appears unwell in herself or the bleeding becomes more excessive.
I hope this is the same scenario as the one mentioned above and she goes on to have a healthy litter :-)
I have everything crosed right now - trust me it is hard to type with your fingers crossed :D

Well, Pepsi seems fine in herself. She has passed a couple of clots but still appears to be pregnant :-)
I think it is just going to have to be a matter of what will be will be as even if she were aborting there is nothing we can do :-(
Just wish the next few week would hurry up and pass.
Will keep you all informed and thank you for your well wishes :-)

Oh god Karen I have just realised which screamer you are reffering to - that bitch that screamed for the whole hour during the mating!!
Well to be honest we gave our stud dog back to his breeder as he and our male Bordeaux were becoming impossible - even if they saw each other through the runs they would go mad and it was stressing them both out.
However the breeder had him back on the condition that the repeat mating would be given to the people with "the screamer" and I did warn them what she was like!!! "honestly" :D
Jordie is much happier as the breeder only has bitches ;-)
and our bordeaux is much more settled. We are hoping to keep a male out of this litter but things won't be as bad as he and our bordeaux will know each other from the start and though I would never put them together they will be at least able to tolerate each other :-)

Hi Karen
Pepsi is out of Crashkon What a Cracker. We have her mom here she is a full sister to Ch. Fernstaff Special Quest.
Pepsi carries her dads head - very strong.
That is the thing with staffies they become so addictive :-)
Have emailed some pics to you :-)

Just thougt I would let you know that Peps's bleeding now seems to have stopped for the past few days so fingers crossed.
Someone mentioned it could have been her stretching causing the bleeding. That sounds quite plausable as she is very big and stil a week and a half to go.
Just hope she is big due to quantity of pups and not the size of the pups as we would like her, as everyone does, to be able to free whelp :-)
