We tryed putting himin the car cage and he barks none stop. We have tryed putting food kong in but it does not intrest him. We have tryed puting one of the other dogs in with him but that doesn't work we also tried a dog car harness

Have you tried covering up his crate so that he can't see out?

He might be anxious about the car - if you have a secure area where you can let Ollie get in and out of the car then try feeding Ollie in the car - make sure his hungry - so morning brekkie might be best - let him in to eat in the stationary car. Also try putting something from his bed in there to calm him and keeping the car stationary - reward when Ollie is quite. Then try short journeys with Ollie travelling in the car - one thing to avoid is shouting or looking at Ollie when he barks - Ollie will only see thsi as a reward. I'd tyr short periods of calm time in the car to try and break the habit. One question - is ollie a dominant dog ? Could be he is getting distressed about not being in control. If thsiis a possibility consult a trainer or behaviourist for advice.

Hi, my dog suddenly decided she didn't like being in the car anymore (I think after my partner drove her around once!) What I did was to give her liver treats to encourage her into the car and just sit in it for a while without closing her in or anything. After a few times of this, I then closed the door, making sure she had some treats and gradually built it up from there. Although I am sure she still doesn't like the car now (she always tries to run and hide if she hears the word), she will get in without any fuss if she knows she has to and we don't hear a peep out of her.

He is the most dominant out of my dogs he is fine going in the car we tryed taking him round the blo0ck and as soon as we move he starts. We try ignoring him and he then starts scraping at the bars i am going to try feeding him in the car and covering him up and treating him when he is quiet
thanx 4 your replys

How does he behave in the car when it is stationary, and you start the engine and still don't move?
- By cassie N ollie [gb] Date 08.08.03 09:39 UTC
He is all right untill he realises we are actually moving
we took him the vet earlier and he wanted to be on my knee looking out the front window or have his head out the window

Hi,
As I'm sure you know, those are two of the most dangerous positions in a car that a dog can possibly be! Would you let a child ride loose on your lap, or with its head out of the window? What happens during an emergency stop or accident? It may go through the windscreen, or get crushed against the dashboard with your weight behind it, or if its head is out of the window, it is likely to be decapitated. Not good.

So you're going to have to find a better way for him to travel. I'm told the safest place for a dog is in the footwell of the front passenger seat, below the level of the dash. Can you secure him there?

We try keeping him there and he stays for a while and if we stop at traffic lights a junction etc he wants to be looking out the window We took him out earlier to buy him a ne halti and he sat on the back seat with his head between the 2 chairs so we praised him for being quiet but as soon as the car stopped he was straight on my knee again

I think for his safety (and yours too - it's very dangerous to have a dog roaming loose when you're driving) you're going to have to buy either a crate of a harness to keep him secure in the back.

I need help with this kind of thing. I had Monty in the boot but he got so upset and was pooing and peeing everywhere. I bought him a car harness but he is still barking constantly, whining and howling. He seems a little better when he is on the front seat next to me (in his harness of course) but i can't get him to be quiet. He is worse with the engine running. I have ignored him, praised him when he is quiet and put him in the car without going anywhere but nothing seems to work.

How old is he, and for how long have you tried each of these methods?
:)

He's 13 weeks. I have had him for 5 weeks now. I tried the boot for about a week and the other methods have been ongoing since then.

Ollie has now started being alot better in the car as we spoke to a dog behaviorist (cant spell)
he will now sit in the boot or back seat quietly only the odd whimper. We were told to ignore his winging and if he attempts to conme onto our knee the front of the car etc we had a water spray bottle and once he was back rewarded him with treats his favourite toy. He also now has a dog kong on long journeys to keep him ocupyed. Thanx for all ypur suggestions.

My dog used to do this as soon as we got in the car but was always fine on the return journey. For years I drove to the end of the road, returned home then set off on the journey proper - it worked every time.

Monty was driving me nuts by barking and whining in the car.
I bought a dog harness and put him on the front seat at first. He was alot happier as i could give him some attention while driving and after a little while he didnt whine or bark. Once he got use to that, I then put him on the back seat, praising him when he was quiet. I started with short journeys and followed it with a walk. Now, he is as quiet as a mouse and is really well behaved. It just takes time and patience. It did take 6-8 weeks thought :)
