No, not my attention span!

Does anyone know how old baby goldfish are when they change from black to gold?

Depends on a lot of things not the least, how much sun they get. I've had babies of around 1 inch coloured but at the moment I have a last years baby still black! The fish starts turning underneath first and the black on the back seems to get even blacker!! Then gradually that seems to start getting a rusty colour and eventually the rust gets redder.

Regars, John

You have just solved one of lifes great mysteries for me. Years ago I bought 3 fish for a small aquarium, one was Gold (Gin) one was black (Tonic) and the third was multicoloured (Ice) Eventually Tonic turned gold and my son was convinced he had died and I had replaced, I asked everyone if this was normal and nobody could give me an answer. I even asked a bloke at the Sea Life Centre and he just thought I was mad. :D

Glad to help, Lisa! Now all you have to do is convince your son you're not really a goldfish assassin.....
:D

We don't have them now but used to reckon 18 months to 2 years.

I've just counted over 40 babies in the pond, ranging from half an inch to an inch in length. They're all this year's babies, as we only filled the pond in April, putting in 5 fish, 3 of which promptly died, and then it was taken over by frogs and Great Crested Newts.

So it looks like next year I'll be running a goldfish stall....

Wish someone could solve my goldfish mystery! Had 3 fish in a tank, range of sizes - went away overnight a couple of weeks ago and came back to only 2 fish. There is a lid on tank, which from where the tank is (under a cupboard) I can barely believe the cat could have got off IF she wasn't an 'upstairs' cat as she doesn't like the dogs - but I certainly don't believe she could have replaced it

Now, obviously, one/both of the other two must have eaten it - but it was the biggest one by a long way, and neither of the others looked fat - and there is not a sign of the blasted thing????

sorry Marina but yep - they've polished it off. I found a dead one once, went to get a net, came back and it was gone. It only takes a minute.

I thought they were goldfish, not piranhas!!! The middle one now lives on his own, as he also killed the other later, but didn't polish that one off. He used to be called Fergus, he now gets called Hannibal - stupid fish, now consigned to a life alone, as the miserable bugger eats everyone else!!
