HI,
i would like to put a bit more weight on my shih-tzu's,i have read alot about tripe,is it fattening?how much per day should i give? Emma is 3yrs. and Bonnie is 7mths. i live in Australia so i can only get the white stuff from the butcher,is that o.k?

Also i have heard the words MIXER and CEREAL used alot on this site, what do these mean? We have a bit of a language barrier,LOL.

Hi yes tripe will help to put the weight on and no the white is no good at all as all the goodness has gone out of it, you need green and mixer is biscuit meal do you not have any dog food stores near you? your butcher should be able to sell you the green tripe ask him to mince it up for you as dogs can eat it better that way. Hi Ozzie our dog loves tripe and it has turned a skinny as a rail dog into a comfortably covered one. As far as I know, mixer is a kind of biscuit used with meat and people sometimes say cereal when they mean mixer. don't feed mixer alone - if dry food is for feeding by itself it will say complete on it. I mix the tripe in with a complete food to make it more interesting, and judge the amounts by what he finishes up.

The white is just a piece of chewy, rubbery, bleached stuff, 'fit' for human consumption. Ideal as a chewy for your dog, but not much else.
I doubt any butcher will be able to get you the greeny grey stuff. This is not fit for human consumption as it often has the contents of last meal minced in with it....sounds gross, but that's why it's good for dogs and why they love the smelly stuff. If you have one of the larger pet/feed stores, try looking in their freezer sections as that's where you're most likely to find it. :)
HTH...

Find out where your nearest abatoir is, and you may be able to buy whole tripe from there. They may also be able to advise where you can get it already minced for pet consumption.
