I currently have a 14 month old cocker spaniel bitch. I am looking for another and have been advised that a dog would be better than a bitch as they may not get on. I have had lots of confusing advise on which one of them to have speyed/neutered. I do not intend to show them or to breed from them. Any advice would be great. e.mail: lee.sbullen@btopenworld.com

Hi Guest, The trouble with advice, is that the more you ask the more confusing it gets. I keep both sexes with no problems, they all get along fine dog with dog and bitch with bitch. When it comes to the girls being in season I have facilities to keep them apart, and I have never seen any need to sterilise any of them. The males are not at stud and never have been, so no competition there. So what I'm trying to say is the choice of sex is entirely up to you if you intend to neuter or if you can separate them when neccessary. You should know though that weight gain can be a problem in neutered animals and their coats deteriorate into a wooly unmanagable mess, so you will undoubtedly require the services of a good grooming parlour, however as it's Cocker Spaniels we're talking about you would need that anyway.
Good Luck in your decision and enjoy your dogs.
