i'm sure there is many of you in the same situation or have been.....
we have a 2yr old cavalier,who just loves to play with other dogs, so we got him a friend last week after a lot of thought and consideration thinking he would love it...but he's not quite made friends with her yet.. is this normal ??
he has started to play a little bit(about an hour out of the whole day) i really hope he isant upset by the new arrival as he means the world to me.
he does eat better scince she has been here ( 10 days in total )
any tips would be grateful .. should i encourage him more to play or just leave him to his own devices and let them sort it out between themselves ?
like i said before he loves playing with dogs, and we have also had our friends dog stay overnight and he loved it...

I have two bullmastiffs. The male was just over 18 months when we got him a puppy. He was just like your Cavalier. Loved to play with other dogs. In fact, he could be a bit of a problem because he'd run off to play with dogs.

On the first day we had the puppy, he was over the moon to have a little dog in the house. But, the next day when he got up and seemd to realise that she'd moved in, he wasn't quite so chuffed.

When we got the little puppy, he'd play with her a bit. But was more interested in making sure she knew her place. She wasn't allowed to pick up any toys without him taking them from her. He also tried to steal her food - the way he saw it, all the food was his and he didn't want to share.

She's almost 9 months old now and they are the best of friends. In fact, the puppy is now the only dog that my male will play with. She's the only dog we know that can take the very rough play bullmastiffs seem to prefer so my older dog now just trots along with other dog and saves playtimes for his puppy.

I think it just takes a bit of time for the resident dog to accept a new comer.

You haven't had the pup for long and I'm sure that they'll be friends soon.

I had something similar with introducing Dilly to Rocky and saff. Whilst saffi was in love straight away, and wanted to mother dilly, (she isnt a very good mum is saff, a bit rough) rocky thought dill was the very spawn of beelzebub and wouldnt go near him!!!!

If Dilly went near rocky, rocks would grrrrrrr at him and leap out of the way, as if electrocuted!!!!!

However, its all fine now, after a few weeks Rocky settled down, enjoyed the peace adn quiet that came from Dill taking up Saffis attention, and now they are all best mates!
