Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Puppy shops

Firstly please take this post for what it is- a question. I freguently visit the board to simply read the posts and i'm fully aware of your hesitence to answer certain 'troll posts'.
Basically my question is regarding puppy shops. I don't know if many of you are aware but there are several large puppy shops in East London. One in particular, in Plaistow is huge. It boasts to have over 40 breeds, all on the premesis. Of each breed there may be one or two litters at any time. Work out the math, thats alot of dogs in a very small space.
I am looking for a puppy now and have been doing alot of research. I know NOT to buy from such a place. However i decided to visit the place for myself after i heard about it.
On arriving i was taken upstairs, where i saw pen after pen of puppies. There are two lady staff which seem to be in charge and both wear veterinary nurses uniform (!) Now this shocks me as i'd be very suprised if a qualified veterinary nurse would work in such a place.
I asked about the pups, it seems some but not all are KC reg. regardless of which prices for a small pup is £500+. It seems the pups are dirty, and very poorly socialised, to the point when i asked to see the GSD's, the pups all immediately hid in the corner of the pen, terrified and extremely shy and nervous.
i asked where these puppies are bred, and was told they came from 'reputable breeders in Wales'.

Now i heard the advice these 'nurses' were giving, the number of people walking out with 2 big boisterous pups was astounding. As were the young families with no previous experience with dogs, going home with a rotweiler pup. As i left it seemed the nurses were annoyed with all my probing questions and the length of time i had stayed there to leave empty handed.

Now i want to ask? Shouldn't this be illegal? That so many people go in to this place to buy a fish and leave with a totally unsuitable dog?
Also if someone could also please help me out with registering. I seem to recieve no notification of a password.
Thankyou

Before our dog came to live with us we thought long and hard about it - I wanted a dog for 33 years before I finally had the right kind of house, enough cash to feed and pay vet fees and waited until the kids were old enough not to climb on the dog and my husband finally agreed. It surprises me that you can obtain a dog so easily on a whim - we met a little lurcher who was allowed to go into a home where the child was so reluctant around dogs he had to be fished out of the waiting room to see them. The placement failed and the lurcher looked really timid and sad when I saw him. our whole family spent time looking after our pal's dog to show our kids what the commitment would be, and I did refuse a dog from a rescue because I felt we were too inexpereinced to deal with his destruction issue. There are so many pups, young and old dogs in rescues needing homes and it's all out in the media - a mixed blessing? - it's so sad people don't think first. If it upsets me, it must enrage the decent breeders taking time and trouble to bring on happy healthy dogs. What are the laws about this in England and if it's this bad have you reported them to the RSPCA?

Luddite question - what's a troll post?

Sorry to say the only interest the RSPCA would have in this establishment would be collecting a donation from them. It is not illegal to sell puppies from such a place and the fact that they put their staff into 'nurses uniform' just shows how cynical they are.

That is shocking - why is it legal to keep animals in filthy conditions and give misleading advice at sale? Why would the RSPCA not intervene if animals were suffering - thats what it's meant to be for? Mind you I am a bit cynical about some of these animal protection bods now - my neighbour had an old Rottie who went blind, its back end went and he lay on the path outside their house moribund as he couldn't bear to have the dog PTS. The SSPCA attended and nothing changed except I got a brick through my window for grassing. Up here no-one wants to know about stray dogs, and our obedience class instructor is braced for an influx of rescue dogs as she says lots of dogs are abandoned when the owners go on holiday, and some will find new homes with people motivated to train them.

The RSPCA has a terrible reputaion, especially on here. Personally, they turn my stomach with their soppy rolf harris programmes, and spending money operating on ancient budgies when there are real cruelty cases out there.

They disgust me.

Guest, I hope you are able to register soon as I would like you to e-mail me please. Which licensing authority does this particular shop come under.? Have you contacted them? The fact that people are foolish enough to purchase unsuitable pups for their lifestyle and pay an extortionate amount is personal choice. Our worry is that very shortly the pups will end up in rescue. The dogs up for sale are obviously not socialised and have not been handled which will no doubt lead to behavoural problems in later life. If you feel the pups are suffering, eg no water, unclean, pens too small etc. please contact your local environmental division and ask for an inspection to be made.

Thanks for pointing out another way of reporting abuse which could be more effective. than using the SSPCA - I'm in Scotland.

it makes my blood boil that in todays modern society that there are still no way that innocent animals can be fully protected from this mass production. They are only in business due to people buying their goods and stupid loopholes in the law.People need educating into where to buy puppies and kittens.IF PEOPLE READ THIS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED BUYING FROM THESE PLACES,DONT!!!! DO NOT BUY FROM THEM AND THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO KEEP GOING( WE HOPE)
