I have a 3 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier (BAXTER) who at the moment just will not eat his complete puppy mix anymore. At the moment he has a varied diet of 4 meat meals a day, consisting of mince, chicken, liver and stewed beef. He will eat all these but I am aware that he needs to be getting the right nutrients in his food. He is a very lively and health boy and very energetic so no problems there but I need advice on how I can ensure that he is getting the correct amount of nutrients. What can you suggest. I have tried mixing but he just leaves the mix.

Hi,
At about 12 weeks I cut my puppies' meals down to 3 a day - try this - he may not need 4 meals a day now. What carbohydrate is he getting with his meat? And go very cautiously with the liver - I would say once a week is ample, as it is very rich and can upset their tummies, and they can also overdo the Vitamin A if fed this too often.

I too would cut down to 3 meals a day. Mix the complete food in with the meat, if a dry meat like chicken, bind it together with a little bio yogurt. Try feeding him mostly complete as his first meal when he is most hungry. If he eats that I wouldn't worry too much at this stage.

Have you tried adding a sprinkling of grated cheese over his dried food - my Staffy loves this .
Also try mixing in a little sardine or tuna and maybe scrambled egg . These are Gus's favourites :) Although not all at the same time I might add ;)

at 3 months i'd also be giving goats milk once a day.

That's a new one on me, I think if I had goats milk in the house I would be bathing in it, no, seriously is this something that would be beneficial, I would be keen to find out what benefits Baxter could get from Goats milk. At 6 weeks he was having weetabix which he loved but then at 9-10 weeks he went off this completely onto 4 meat meals a day. Do you think he would welcome Goats milk and would I just give this to him on its own?

thanks for the tip

Only add fish with no bones and if you choose tuna opt for one in oil or spring water - not brine . Also oily fish like mackerel is good for coats . :)

I didn't think about that, obviously he will most hungry in the morning so I will try him with the puppy mix then.

Thanks for the tip

Thank you for your reply. I will certainly incorporate some carbohydrates in his diet as at the moment we haven't added anything. I will go carefully with the liver also

Once again thanks for your help.

HI, his diet should not really have more than 30% meat or fish, so you should add quite a lot of puppy complete or even some cooked pasta if he wont eat much biscuit. Weaned puppies who are doing well dont need milk, but if you are going to give it, introduce it slowly, just a little to start with. He must have a very strong stomach to tolerate all the meat you are giving him - so go easy on the milk it can make them runny.
