I saw on the Lab Rescue site that John mentioned the price of antibiotics. The tabs he had for Anna were £1 each. Our dog is allergic to just about everything and has to have Marbocyl which are £3-75 each. He has to have them periodically and had 28 last summer and 20 this year. Unfortunately by the look of his tummy he will need more before the week is out. He is sensitive to his own bacteria that lives on all our skin. This is the only antibiotic which clears his lesions rather than making them worse. D.

There are moves afoot to compel vets to issue prescriptions which will allow you to buy your medication anywhere. You can in fact ask for a prescription now (As I understand it) and certain branches of Boots (in rural areas) already dispense some of the more common drugs.
Things should get easier :)

John I think you jest things get easier, I don't think so, if vets can't make money on the drugs they will stick it on other things, with this law I think comes the prohibition on the sale POL's things like wormers
and flea treatments which you will have to go to the vet for more money again.

I know I’m a bit thick but what exactly do you mean by POL's? (I do wish people would not use initials, it makes poor old men like me feel inferior!)
I understand that things such as Frontline were what started it all off and that these things are specifically included. I don't doubt though that vets will try to recover the money from somewhere. I have a thing about "Veterinary Hospitals" The instant a practise starts calling themselves this, thoughts of the animal drop as thoughts of the money raise!

Sorry John, these are wormers and other things that can be bought in pet shops and other outlets at the moment, I'm not 100% sure if this affects pets but it does for other livestock medications.
Thougt I was the oldest one on here!!

I would seriously doubt you are older than me in fact I can think of a couple on here that are possibly older!
OK then, so what exactly does POM and POL mean? The exact words?

Hi John
I found this.....but couldn't find POL....perhaps it's PML?
· Definitions of legal categories:
o GSL: "A medicine which comes within the General Sale List." (B202)
o P: "A pharmacy medicine." (B202)
o POM: "A prescription only medicine." (B202)
o PML: "A medicine which comes within The Medicines (Exemptions for Merchants in Veterinary Drugs) Order 1998 and its successors." (B202)
· Medicines on the PML list are obtainable from pharmacists, veterinary surgeons and from agricultural merchants, but only to a buyer who is a farmer or person who maintains animals for business purposes.
· Medicines which are Pharmacy medicines do not require a prescription but can only be supplied by a registered pharmacy or a veterinary surgeon.
· POM drugs are available on prescription only, as issued by a veterinary surgeon, and can only be supplied for animals that are "under the care" of the prescribing veterinary surgeon.
· Medicines on the General Sale List may be obtained without a prescription and some may be sold by e.g. pet shops and supermarkets (for example some anthelmintics).
· Under the Act, a veterinary surgeon may only dispense PML or POM medicines to clients for administration to "animals under his care", i.e. that the veterinary surgeon has real responsibility for the animal(s) concerned, not just nominal responsibility, and has seen them recently or has sufficient knowledge of their state of health to be able to diagnose/prescribe properly for them.
· Under the Act POM medicines may only be administrated by a veterinary surgeon or by a person acting "in accordance with the directions" of a veterinary surgeon.
(Hope I'm allowed to post this...it was what came up under a search!)

Hi guest
Have you thought about taking your dog to a homeopathic vet for an alternative to drugs, drugs, drugs??
