i adopted "Boogie" and she is six months old 25 pounds. I notice her tongue is black (about 90%). not much pink. just a few spots. does that mean she has chow in her? i know she is very intelligent, cuz she can come (very much improved) , stay, sit, down and rollover now after training sessions every night. she is orange all over and has big pointed ears and fluffy tail. she has frowning look on her face (cute though) with slanted eyes so to speak (she is not worried literally, just looks it). she doeesnt look chowish as she doesnt have a severe fluffy coat and big mane, but i notice more hair around her neck, just not pronounced like a mane. I have another dog named Zorro who is part rott. both were adopted from Spca, and are very good dogs. alls it takes is patience and love of animals.
also i notice when she has hears voices outside she has more of guard bark (different from her play bark). is she being protective? should i try to get her to stop that? it doesnt bother me, i just want to do the right thing. i sociallize her almost everyday and wkend, she isnt frightened of people, except she wont take treats from strangers except me. thanks for your replies and have a good day.

thumper...i must disagree...a black spot or two can occur in alot of breeds but a predominantly black tongue indicates chow or shar pei which is just a wrinkly chow.........if its chow mix it should have a tail that tries to curl over the back...cat feet and particularly straight stifles.,.easy to housebreak with a disagreable durable dispostion....
im only going on what my vet said,it just strange cause my dog looked nothing like a chow or shar pei,she looked like a white german shepherd, yet her tongue was 95% black.

Newfies also have black on the tongue, sometimes quite a lot. My guess would be that this paticular dog has lots of different dogs in his makeup and may be the black tongue is carried on a domanant gene. So may be umpteen crosses back this dogs has a Chow or Shar Pei in his ancestry, but it could be way, way back.

i think the eurofraser has a black tongue too., one of the newish spitzy type has !!!

Must have had a piccy from someone else then Thumper.
The Eurasier is a mix of Chow, Samoyed, and something else I beleive, so the black tongue makes sense.

Thumper if she has a tail curled on her back she can't look like a GSD. Is it a curl or is it just carried high so the tip is over the back.
May be she is a Chow/Sammi cross.
my german shepherd lab cross didnt have a curly tail ,if u give me e-mail can can send photo of her when she was a pup as she passed away after getting run over:((
jackie ive sent u a photo of her over e-mail hope u dont mind but u can see she hasnt got any other breed in her.

Hi I got the photos. They are all of her sitting though so no way to guess by seeing her body shape and tail carriage, rear angulation.
In the sitting shots she looks like a bright orange GSD cross. In the photos the tongue appears Pink?
Have you a standing full body shot of her?

Hi Thumper, you have only sent me one but from that there is nothing to suggest she has any gsd at all, but as Barbara says, you need to see a profile and if pos, a front and rear. Can't even see the tail on the photo I have, but from the base it looks more Lab than GSD, the ears and head are more Lab, can see no GSD, and there is no tongue. In the picture I have she is scratching an ear, the back looks med. short, but it is difficult to say and the tail set looks medium also, not low set as in GSD or high as in Spitz.
as i said to you i cant send you anymore photos as the dog passed away last year after getting run over,i didnt send any photo to barbara so we have crossed wires here some where:)
