Topic Other Boards / Foo / Licking wallpaper off......HELP!

Does anyone else here have a cat who licks wallpaper untill it is bare wall?
My cat seems to be obsessed with this small patch of wallpaper on the bit of wall that goes around the window in our bedroom. She must have been licking it for a while, but I never knew what she was doing. Then, not so long ago I realised she was licking it like mad. It looks all soggy and it is down to bare wall now????
Also, just now, she started doing it, so i wrapped the curtain around it to stop her, and she is going mental trying to get around the curtain to get to her wall???
Is this just noodles that is weird, or does anyone elses cat do this?
Is it the salty paste she can taste or something??

when we had our room re-plastered our dog used to lick the walls, once they had been painted he stopped, i think it must be the salt in the plaster or brick although not sure, do you have a damp area under the wallpaper??

It could be damp actually. We recently had the windows done, they were wooden and the wood was damp, so seeing as this part of the wall is only about 5 inches away from the window...they could well be damp.
Hmmm, arent animals odd :)

it could be that she knows she is missing nutrients in her food that she needs

My cat was licking the stone fireplace and I took her to the vets and it turned out she was actually quite ill and she is now on medication for life

Apparently it was her way of trying to find the nutrients she was missing

Hi Rachel.
Thanks...it deffinatly makes you think...
I think I better look at what I am feeding her....thanks for the advice. If she continues after a change of diet, then I shall have her checked out. I check her every day for dehydration, bright eyes, teeth, refill rate etc ( I am really over protctive about her)...but I shall certainly take on board what you said.
thanks

it might not even be that you are feeding her incorrectly, but that her body cant get the nutrients from the food!!!!

Might be worth getting her checked out just incase

Dont worry I'm just as over protective!!! :D

Thanks Rachel..I think I shall do that. Even if all it does is put my mind at ease....god, poor little thing, has gone to the vet so much you would think she lived there :(
She has a very cute but very deformed front left foot. I rescued her at the age of about 10 months from the Vet Surgery where I was a nurse at the time. Her foot is long and has a little thumb on the back. It only has 2 toes ( not including her little thumb)...she is brilliant, she uses it to pick things up like a hand..problem is, cos it is so deformed, her pads havent formed properly, so she constantly gets callouses and had a couple of ops on it :( not a happy puddy. But we love her.Even if she did raid the dog food stoore earlier!!! While the dog kept watch for her!! Grrrr!
:D
Thanks Rachel

Hiya
Well, the vet reckons that she has developed a habit (???) and the spot on the wall is damp so she is licking it because she enjoys it. Apparently it is like an addiction (ok...my cat gets stranger)...I have covered the patch up already, and the vet agreed. Its cos noodles has left her scent and taste on that particular patch, she hasnt and shouldnt show interest in any other patches though.
Thanks for your advice though..probably best to get her checked...you never know.
