Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 13 week old scwt humping!
- By chick [gb] Date 30.07.03 19:36 UTC
Hi. Hope someone has some advise for me. My 13 week old scwt pup has been trying to hump any dog he has come across (Starting very young!!!). Can anyone give me advise on what I can do because not only is it embarrasing but I have 3 young children, he hasn't tried it with them so far. Is it something he will get over or is the only thing to do is get him neutered at 6 months, if the latter, what can i do in meantime? HELP!

Mine did this with my Mum's dog (all very embarassing!) at age 7 weeks - so your's is not an early starter at all!! Apparently it's not sexually driven, it's all to do with dominance or if they are feeling nervous. We just told him to stop it and praised him for being calm. I don't think you should hold it against him!! Ours just tries it on with his blanket and he gets told off and he soon stops, firm but fair I think the saying is!!
Good luck.

I've got a 14 week terrier cross - and he humps my daughters Simba soft toy which we gave him when he arrived at 8 weeks old. (It replaced the last puppy in the litter with whom he had shared a week of fun!) I too hope he grows out of it. We just try to ignore it - but then with a soft toy, thats easier! Good luck!

For some dogs, it's just good fun! It might be their way of playing a good game.
Try to arrange games with adult friendly dogs who will be too big for him to hump (and wont let him!) and will teach him how to play properly. A good puppy class will allow him the chance to meet other puppies in a supervised, controlled environments (steer clear of anything with a puppy 'free for all') and help him to learn nice games. He wont be trying to be dominant, he's just wound up and excited and needs to learn another way.
By the way, don't let him play with any dogs who might be aggressive to him when he starts, adult dogs do not like it and don't see it as fun at all!
Don't be worried that your dog is trying to take over the world! It's not happening!

With stuffed toys, look out for the signs he's about to start, and then distract him with a toy and redirect him onto that. Perhaps start playing fetch games or tuggy with him. That will mean when he starts getting excited, after a while he'll grab a toy first, as that's more rewarding than his 'other' game. Just ignore him if you miss the early signs and he's in full swing, bringing out a toy then will be a reward. Most people tend to squeal and over react when the dog starts humping things, don't do that or the dog will find it's great fun!

regards,
Jo
