Topic Dog Boards / Health / F/coat with nasty sore on face
- By liberty Date 10.07.03 15:18 UTC
Earlier this week I noticed a bald spot on libbys' cheek which looked very red. I thought she'd just scratched her face when out looking for her ball. As the days went on it got bigger looked redder and then looked infected, the next morning it was really red again.
So hubby took her straight to the vets. He said it was <<< a dermatological reaction to an ear infection >>>>, gave her an injection, some tablets and a cream to put on. :(

Has anybody had any experience of this, or any suggestions, I don't disbeleive my vet, but it just doesn't sound right to me.

Early last year I suddenly noticed that Taz had a funny patch on his cheek. When I clipped the hair away, The was a patch about 2" wide, kind of like wet ecxema (??). I treated it with 3 x daily Tea Tree washes and it cleared up after a week or so, but I never found out what caused it and it hasn't come back.

Odd really.

Hi Julia

Thanks for your post. Libbys sore doesn't seem to be getting any better, infact worse if anything :( She's going back to the vets on Monday, and I'm going to ask if it's ok to use tea tree oil on it, as well as the prescribed cream.

I'm still puzzled by the diagnosis, as the sore is not near her ear at all!!! :(

Hi Liberty

Unfortunately they can get worse before they get any better. Its sods law.

I can't see that the Vet could have any objections to Tea Tree, as it is just a very effective antiseptic. If you washed the sore with Tea Tree either neat, or diluted slightly in warm water, working from the outside in to prevent spreading then put the cream on.

Is a grass seed a possibility?? It is that season, and they can work a hell of a long way through. Or maybe a thorn, wedged and abscessed.

I s'pose the vet is following the track of the ear canal but I would have thought you would have noticed an ear infection .

If it is something like abscess you could give her Silicea (for a slow former with swollen glands) or Hepar Sulph if it is a "leaker" to help expel all the nasties.

Hope Libby feels better soon.

Hi Julia

Thanks very much for taking the time to post such a comprehensive reply. It is much appreciated. I'll look into the grass seed possibility ( a friend lost her dog to one :( ) and make sure the vet gives her a thorough check over. I've also made a note of the other remedies you've mentioned.

Thanks again

Hi Julia

Thank you for asking about libby :)

I took her back to the vets on Monday, she wasn't happy, as the sore didn't appear to be healing. She prescribed a course of antibiotics, and said if there was no improvement, they would refer her to a dermatologist.
She said Tea-tree oil would be very good, so I,ve been bathing libbys' face with a diluted solution since then. I was reluctant to give her the antibiotics, as the last time she had them, for her doggy acne, they gave her bad sickness and diahorrea, as the weather was so hot I didn't think it was a good idea. However, it seems about the same at the moment, so I'm going to give the antibiotics a go, and get a large roll of kitchen paper :)

ps. I've tried to reply to you twice, but keep being lparkined !!! :(

Hi Liberty

Don't talk to me about Lparkin :( If being parkinised wasn't bad enought I couldn't access at all yeaterday, even to see the board.

I hope Libbys face is showing signs of healing now. If it is similar to Taz, then it could take a good week with the T Tree. Probably teaching gramdma to suck eggs here!! but remember, cooled boiled water, clean bowl, and clean cotton wool for every wipe & from the outside in.

Best wishes

Hi Julia

Just to let you, I kept up bathing libbys' face with the tea-tree oil solution (gave the anti-biotics a miss on this occasion) and her face is healing very well. The hair is starting to grow back, and all in all it's looking really good. Thank you for your help and advice, much appreciated :)

liberty and big sloppy kiss from libby :D
