Topic Dog Boards / Health / URGENT help pls!Testicle swelling
- By Sonia4 [kr] Date 28.07.03 18:11 UTC
Dalmation since yesterday suddenly excessive testicle swelling to size of snooker ball, just one, other ok. At the same time lethargic, won't eat, sad and sick. Took him to vet who just took temperature(high) and said he had a fever, gave him a couple of jabs, nothing else ( I am literally up the jungle in Asia so desperate for any help/advice ). Today took him to Animal Hospital where they examined him mainly for cause of being sick, they were thorough and decided to give him chest Xray after Vet had used stethyscope. Xray result showed some 'mist/white area' at top of both lungs and they decided was some infection(?). Couple of jabs and some tablets. They took blood test, result in a few days. The swelling they thought was not connected and gave a jab to reduce 'swelling'. This evening it is even more swollen to about 1.5 x size of a snooker ball.
There is discharge far mor than normal, Vet said was normal, but I 'know my dog' and it was way beyond normal. He lies down but won't/can't sleep. Temperature 'appears' normal, he walks a little then lies down.
Desperate for anyone who has experienced anything of this nature. he is 2 yrs old, normally fit/healthy/active.
You were all so helpful for a friend's Dalmations skin infection and it cleared up thanks to advice on this forum, now it's my turn to beg for any help/information.

Update:
Swelling increased during night yet again, although lethergic seems brighter and will take tiny amount of food, but testicles still as large,
..anyone??

Erm sounds to me like you need to take him to the vets

If he is a bit improved then the infection may be coming under control. I does take time for the medication to work, but I would expect to see him feeling better within 48 hours. And if he is not or if he is getting worse take him back to the vet.

He has been twice to different Vets, local vet and the Animal hospital which is 5 hr trip. We live in Asia up in the jungle area (as I did mention).

You do have my sympathy but we can't diagnose a dog on here. If you have seen 2 vets and they have given it drugs then all you can do is hope the drug works. But if the drugs don't work the only advice I can give from here is to take the dog back to see a vet again. As you are in Asia you dog may have an infection that none of us here in the UK or our members in America have come across and the best help we can give is to say, if the dog does not continue to improve then return to the vets.

Has he been bitten by something?? a nasty bug or snake etc? Especially likely if he was playing with it.
What you could be seeing is a big absess or internal infection in the testical itself due to a nasty bit...can you see any bite marks, punture wounds of bruising in a specific area on his on his testical.
Is this possible?

Sonia - keep us posted on your dally :) There are a couple of us here who are breed devotees :)

A friend told me a story of one of her chows developing a swollen testicle. Very large, discoloured and tender which turned out to be a 'torsion' of his testicle and needed prompt Vet attention.
- By Dill [gb] Date 29.07.03 13:33 UTC
First thing I thought of was torsion too. Failing that, is it possible that the dog could have mumps???? I know this can affect the testicles as well as other glands.

Just a shot in the dark really but might be worth asking the Vet.

Good luck hope he's better soon

I was looking up in one of my books and this is what I found, sorry if it has all ready been mentioned :)

Swollen, painful testicle - Dog is reluctant to move, depressed - possible fever - Infected testicle. Torsed (twisted within the scrotum) testicle.

Testicular tumor

ttfn :)

I was going to suggest testicular tumour but I thought from the way the poster was saying..she had had the all clear on that front..but if she hasnt..then deffinatly get him checked for it.

Thanks so much everyone! You don't realise how much help this all is!
We called and got the result of the blood test, he said the blood contained a HIGH level of bacteria.
The swelling is now up to the size of about 2 snooker balls!
The first Vet was obviously a waste of time! The Animal Hospital were good, checking temp etc, feeling stomach, throat etc, he was not that 'interested' in the swelling but was more concerned/interested in some lung infection. The Xray was done while we held him(basic stuff this!) and the result showed the 'misting' at the top of the lungs, I was emphesising all the time about the swollen testicles though.

The 'twisted testicle' is possible, one has always been larger than the other and always hung 'down' much further than the other. It is deffinately '1' that is swollen , not 'both'.
I am trying my best to use logic. If 1 has swollen so large but the other hasn't then that looks like it is not an infection in the scrotum itself but in just 1 of the testicles, so the 'twisted' theory has some logic, it is just 1 that has the problem. Any infections going into the bloodstream would account for that infection reaching the lungs.
Apart from the swelling no visable problems at all, gums are ok, eyes clear, diaoreah(?sp) yes but not too bad. We are taking it in turns with him, he is now sleeping 'with' my husband.
Anyway it's off on a 5 hour trip in the morning (soon) back to the Animal Hospital, fingers crossed!
When I mentioned 'Cancer' to the Animal Hospital the Vet just said he didn't think so because it was 'so rare', yet searching the Internet and this forum it appears it is not 'so rare'.

Poor thing looks so sad, he has been barking today and walks outside but then suddenly gets lathargic again, seems to come in spurts. Thanks SO much everyone!

As it sems that your access to veterinary care is a bit difficult, and if the dog is not required for breeding, might it not be best to havge th testicle removed, and then it can be analysed. If it is a tumour then you will know. Also if it is infected the source of further infection is removed.

My oldest bitch's sire had this happen suddenly at 11 yuears old, and it was a tumour. He lived for another year but it had metastisised to his Liver, which resulted in his death.

Good News! he is recovering !
Took him back to the Animal Hospital and 2nd blood test was excess of white blood cells. They ruled out cancer. Changed the medication and some higher potency jabs and by last night he was much better. Today the swelling has reduced 50-70% and he is 80% back to his old self.

I would like to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions, we all know that when our pets are suffering just like a human it helps so much simply being able to discuss it with others. I think eagerly waiting for a moment or idea help me through this!
Thanks again from us, and of course from 'Pongo' ( sorry, long story on the name!)

So glad he's on the mend :D :D
It can't have been easy so far from Vet help
