I have a dog who is two years old, and also a bitch who is now 8 months old.
She has just started her first season and in time I would like to have one litter from her before having her speyed.

Can you advise what is the best age to have her first litter, so I cn now keep a check of when she is in season and when to let then be together.
They both have a very beautiful nature and would make a really lovely temperament puppy

I would also like to have my dog neutered, and would like to know the best age to get this done, providing he has been able to mate with my Girl?

OK, I am sure I will get jumped on for what I am about to say. Can you answer yes to the following questions:-

Did you research the background of both the dog and bitch to make sure that they would make a good breeding pair?

Have both the dogs passed the breed specific health tests?

Had the parents and grandparents of both dogs passed the breed specific health tests?

Will you be able to find the money/time to have a litter and bring them up in a suitable way?

Will you have the room and inclination to take back any pups that are not settled or happy in their new homes?

Will you be able to visit the homes you are putting your pups into to see if they are suitable?

Have you asked the opinion of other experts in the breed to be sure that both your dogs are of sufficient quality to be bred from?

If you have answered yes to all the above, are you prepared to risk the health and may be the life of the bitch to have a litter? And the possible change in the dog after he has been used at stud?

I think its a very good idea to advise people of the potential pitfalls of breeding but shouldnt there be on the end and if you've answered yes to these questions as well, here is the answer to the questions you actually asked!!!

just that its all fine and good to ask if the poster has done all his research and looked into breeding properly but his actual question was never answered!!!

If jackie wasnt successful from dissuading him from breeding then it would surely be better that he went away educated as much as possible!!!

Not attacking you Jackie, honest, just my opinion!!

Well if yes was answered to the questions then I guess I did not need to ask them and there will be no problem with the original person going ahead and breeding. But then I guess if the answer is yes they would not have asked in the first place.

Breeding cavaliers

1.Are your dog & bitch from parents that have Current Clear Heart & Eye Certificates These cannot be obtained from your vet unless he/she is a specializt ? If they do not you should not breed from your dog & bitch
2.Do your dog & bitch have current Clear Heart & Eye Certificates ? If not you should breed from them until the tests have been done & they are clear
3.Are their pedigrees compatible ?
4.Your bitch should be over 18 months &/or on her third season & no earlier
5.If you just your dog & then castrate him he will still be interested in bitches
6.You should be prepared not to part with your puppies before they are 12 weeks old & you must have them Heart Tested before you sell them & they should also be vaccinated before they are sold
7.Be prepared to take back any puppy at any age if they are no longer wanted
8.Be prepared to have to have a C section if the bitch has any puppies
9.Be prepared to do checks in detail on anyone who wants one of your puppies there are lots of unsuitable people wanting Cavaliers out there
