- By turtletrax [us] Date 26.07.03 23:39 UTC
Hello everyone I am new here and just had a few questions aboout a new pup.
I have a yellow lab that was broke in kennel by 2 nite and has been just wonderful to train. So now we got a shepherd mix from the animal shelter and she whines and barks constantly. The first nite she was out because she was spayed and anthestic was wearing off still. Second nite she slept til about 4 am when i got up for work and was about an hour and back to bed. Then last nite she was put in a kennel and barked constantly. I put my hand there and and she would quiet for a few and then start again.
It was at 1amtil 230a.m. then at 5am, then at 630am i finally got up. Then she whines and barks aweful when put up when i take shower and leave. Does anyone have suggestions????

Please HEllppp She is so cute but so LOUD!!!

Are you telling us that you have two dogs kept permanently in outside kennels and that you are out to work during the day? Your second dog has just come from a kennels to a new home and it is confined to the garden? It is hard to believe that after speying the poor dog did not receive the comfort and reassurance it so badly needed.

well said.

Welcome to the forum anyway :D

I suggest you take at least 2 weeks off work to help her settle in. Until she's had her stitches out she shouldn't be left unattended anyway. Poor soul is probably terribly confused and lonely.

im very surprised that the animal shelter let you have a dog from them if you are out at work all day and the dog will be left outside.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.07.03 12:18 UTC
I read the reference to kennel as meaning an indoor kennel/crate. As the poster talks about putting their hand in to reassure the bitch????
- By Steph33 [gb] Date 27.07.03 20:39 UTC
Thumper I agree with you. Is this poster a troll perhaps?? As we all know animal rescue's have rigorous vetting procedure's, so I can't believe they would allow a dog to go to the home of a working person.
And what dog lover would keep their beloved pet outside, and especially after having an operation. I can't believe the poor, confused, pained little thing was left.
C'mon poster, give it some LOVE.

Some rescue dogs are happy going to working peoples homes, particularly older ones.... its not realistic to say that no rescues can be homes with working families.

I read this as though the poster is in the US - where, I believe animal shelters are not as strict as our rescues as they have so many puppies to find homes for. I could be wrong however.

Finally, this poster could just be naive and not realise the damage that could be done if they are leaving the pup outside. I believe you were the person saying that people make mistakes on another thread, so perhaps we shouldn't be too judgemental until we get an update on the puppy? ;)

just wanted to say it was a portable indoor kennel. and it was for sleeping purposes only
I am not cruel to my family or animals wich are family.
And she is not left alone for hardly any period of time
my husband is home all day

Turtletrax, I apologise for judging without hearing the full facts. (Touche Chloe ;-) ... you were rite)
But if your dogs are howling in their crates, they may just be wanting reassurance. I let my dog get used to his crate gradually during the day, and when he was sleepy or fell asleep on the floor etc, I'd put him in the crate, with little treats inside for him, so he'd know that it was a nice place to be at/HIS place. Also put a sheet over the top of crate, but it was left open at the front, so he would feel more secure in it. It was a gradual process, just over a couple of days, and he loves his crate.
Again, sorry .

- By Carla Date 27.07.03 14:30 UTC
if the poster is in the US then they spay them as puppies i believe - but i could be wrong

Even more reason for not leaving her unattended until the wound has healed and the stitches are out.
- By Carla Date 27.07.03 15:02 UTC
I agree completely... the puppy should be indoors, being kept warm, with company.

I guess you all misunderstood i was keeping her in portable kennel at nite. My two dogs Tala (lab) and Willow my new addition shep mix. They are the most spoiled dogs in the world. They go everywhere me and my husband go. They are indoor dogs and have a kennel in garage if were gone more than 2 hours that is 8x12.. It is the portable kennel that she whines and cries in when nitetime. I solved the problem last nite i kept her along side my bed and she slept from 11 p.m to 6:45 a.m then until 9 a, after going outside to potty. My husband is home all day he is on disablility. And my two girls will be back next week from family for summer vacation. I know willow my new pup needs lots of love and attention.
Sorry to have confused you. She is from an animal shelter and they said she was 3.5 to 4 mos old when went to vet on friday they said she was not 4 mos because she hasnt lost any baby teeth.
She is GETTING LOTS OF LOVE AND WARMTH> IM NOT CRUEL!!!!
I have a zoo in my family. I have 1 rabbit, 2 lovebirds, 2 red eared sliders and now 2 dogs
besides my loving humans and they are all treated as family and with the utmost respect. the stitches are desolvable and the animal shelters require all adopted pets are spayed and neutered by 48 hours of adoption. It does suck for the young ones but they can help control the pet population I guess. She is very excited and loves her new home and attention but I can understand why she doesnt want to be left alone or in a kennel ALL TOO Familiar.

Thanks

Hi, I'm glad you explained, it makes things a lot clearer - and so much better! I for one had visualised a small puppy, in a new strange environment, getting over major surgery, being put in an outside kennel alone all night, and then alone still when you went to work all day..........it's surprising how easily false impressions can be picked up!

I'm sure having her crate/kennel by your bed will help her settle at night. She'll feel a lot more secure with company, and will settle down in your home much quicker.

Good luck
:)

This is another example of the US/UK use of language. I know that often in USA they refer to the Crate/Cages as Kennels. In the UK we nearly alwys mean an outside building or hut. Often in US I see these refered to as Dog Houses!

The written word can also be misinterpreted. I picked up on the putting hand in the kennel to quiet the dog, but no-one else seemed to?

It might just pay to ask for clarification about a post before replying, as the poster may have otherwise been put off the others on the board, by the reaction to the post.

i also saw a post on here a while ago where the person referred to *lifting his hand* to the dog. this was misinterperated as hitting the dog when in fact he meant holding out his hand. :o :o.

Glad to hear that you got Willow settled Turtle. Again I'm sorry for jumping to the wrong conclusion. As Chloe knows I'm not the sort who usually judge's, but last night I'd had a few little drinkie's and jumped to the same conclusion as almost everyone else did, without giving you a chance to explain properly.
The use of terms in our languages can be a problem, as we found out.
I'm a newbie too, and have found everyone to be helpful and friendly.....except when some of us judge too soon :o
Enjoy your new addition to the family
